smartpen

My husband got me one of these for Christmas, and I'm still trying to decide how useful it's going to be. I don't know if all schools are like this, but at OSU they give you packets of notes for every class, and most people take additional notes directly onto these. So I could either take notes in a separate notebook, or just use it as a recorder for lectures.

Even if I ran the notes through the printer to add "dots," they would upload to my computer without the original notes...so what good is that? Hmmmmm. 🙁

i was also wondering this. i'm sure i'll be writing on their notes and they only give out electronic copies so this was one reasoning behind getting a tablet. i feel like as awesome as this pen sounds, it's just not for me for reasons i cant help

This is a concern for me too. I guess it will depend on how much the professors follow the notes.
I have a bunch of notebooks so I figure I will give it a whirl the first few weeks and will probably decide to use it for only specific classes.

Side note: it is GREAT for taking meeting minutes.
Also good for silly stick-figure storytelling 🙂

First thing I did. Had to test it but didn't have any notes to take, so I improvised.

I have a smartpen (2gig version), really like it, but I'm finding that my learning style just doesn't use enough of it's functionality to make it worth using over normal pen. If anyone is interested in buying a used one, mine is still in practically new condition(still have the box and everything). Just PM me.

If anyone notices one for sale on line for a decent price, could they let me know 😛

I'm trying to figure out what I'd like for Christmas... if I could get one for a decent price, I'd use my Christmas money to buy it just to have.

Currently, 90% of my profs use powerpoint and provide us with the notes. I'm used to taking notes on the powerpoint sheet.

But you can print the powerpoints off on a special sheet, right, and have it still work? I don't care if they show up on my PC. I just like the idea of tapping the page and having the pen play back the lecture. I tend to zone out in classes alot due to be overtired or ill. I've already discovered that if you zone out for 10 minutes in anatomy, you're doomed for the next few lectures. I'm just wondering if having the pen and being able to listen to the recording will benefit me enough to justify purchasing one.

wow i havent seen this thread in a while lol

well, i figure this may help someone out who has my problem in school.

My professors talked so fast that i could barely write everything down that i wanted in class. I switched from taking written notes on my tablet to typing out notes.

I use the program One Note from Microsoft Office. It comes with the whole "student office pack" along with WORD, excel, powerpoint. This program has been AMAZING. I know lots of classmates who have started using this too.

Anyway, my point to posting this here was that you can use this program. Import the powerpoint slides, or WORD documents...anything, into it. Then type on the screen whereever you want. You can also "draw" so point arrows to figures (any computer can do the draw features or highlight features! not just tablets.). The best part is there is no line where writing has to go. So you can type your notes ANYWHERE on the screen.

Ok, my REAL POINT haha if your laptop has a microphone, One Note has a record function. You can record the whole lecture, type notes whereever you want. Then when you go back to your notes, if you put the curser over a certain sentence that you typed a "play button" shows up and it will start playing in the middle of the recording where you typed those notes.

So basically, you get the smart pen feature of recording and tracing it back to your notes. You also get to have it on your computer if you find that you can't hand write the notes fast enough. Also, it seems easier if you have lots of power points cuz you don't need special paper.

The Smart Pen does seem really cool... but before you shell out for one of those, I have a tip for you (if you have a Mac) 🙂

On Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac, you can use the "Notebook" layout to take notes in a very similar fashion. You can use your computer's built-in microphone to record the lectures while you type notes in Word. Like the Smart Pen, you can click on points in the text and it will play-back the corresponding audio so you can fill in blanks/review the lectures, etc.. I did this my last year or two of college and it rocked! Wish I had figured it out sooner!

Yes, you can print off your own dot paper, but you need a laserjet printer in order to do so.

I should have installed the software sooner... classes start tomorrow, and I figured out that I needed to order the notebooks now 🙄 That's what happens when you buy a cheap printer!

Can I use it without the special printer? I don't think I can.
