Hello-I'm a lurker of the MD/DO forums, but I thought this question may have a better shot over here...

I have 4 ferrets who have had a few "accidents" on our carpet. I have tried soaking the spots with Nature's Miracle, which took some but not all the smell away. Just recently I soaked the carpet with OdoBan (stuff you can buy at Sam's Club), let it sit overnight, then extracted it out of the carpet with a rented Rug Doctor steam cleaner. Guess what...still smells. Definately not as pungent, but still stinky.

Anyone have ideas about what has worked for them? I love my "kids", but the smell is starting to make me gag!

We sell an enzyme cleaner at the vets I work at... I believe it is made by Kenic, Ill have to check the name when I work tomorrow. The enzymes decompose the odor molecules. It works extremely well!

I don't have ferrets, but Simple Solution has been my preferred brand of carpet cleaner for cat/dog messes over the past 12-15 years. You can get it by the gallon at PETsMART or similar.

your problem is not with the cleaners or agents you are using, it is highly likely that the urine penetrated to the carpet padding, which you CAN'T clean, and a steam cleaner will not clean properly. Worst case scenario - rip up the carpet, change padding, and make sure the ferrets don't mess up again. Another option is to change the padding, but put a layer of flexible plastic in between the padding and the carpet to prevent leakage into the lower layer.

good luck -nate
