I'm working on a summer research project and I was curious if there was a well known journal article or government resource that shows the tobacco smoking rate among populations abusing different drugs (to compare rate among cocaine users, MJ, meth, opiate, etc.)

If you have database access, psycharticles and psycinfo are both great resources.

The other fact is the influence of cigarette smoking. Non-smoking patients have lower PPI compared to smokers, and heavy smokers have the highest PPI.[24][25] This finding runs in accord with the high rates of smoking among schizophrenic patients, estimated at 70%,[26] with many patients smoking more than 30 cigarettes a day.[27] Thus, smoking may be a way of self-medication. Some studies show association of schizophrenia with the CHRNA7 and CHRFAM7A genes, which code for alpha7 subunit of nicotinic receptors, but other studies are negative.[28][29] Contrary to the predictions, nicotine receptor alpha7 subunit knockout mice do not show disruptions in PPI.[30]

I know it's wikipedia, but I have seen data in journals supporting the above information. Just that wikipedia--I could find it there in seconds.

I'll have to look for those.

I have been using Ovid/medline and google scholar.

I thought this would be really, really easy to find, but has been proving more difficult than expected.

There are 100's of articles about "gateway drug" type of effects from tobacco smoking, but its been difficult to find stats about lets say the smoking rate among cocaine users.

And Whopper - I'm extremely new to these fields, but is what you linked related to smoking rates among addict populations that abuse other drugs (MJ/Meth/Opiate/etc) or just schizophrenia?

I was under the impression you couldn't ask for help with research projects here.

As far as I know, that's not the problem. The problem I know of is when people come to this forum asking for medical advice as if we're their treating physician.

Sorry if this broke some rule, for what its worth its not for a school assignment, just doing some background literature research for a study in the works. I was suprised to see that this info wasn't entirely trivial to come by, so was seeing if I was missing anything really obvious.

I was mostly hoping that there was some ".gov" website that would have all this info tabulated, but sadly not.

Misspelled - psycARTICLES and psycINFO were the two.

Obviously you won't be able to access these, but this is my universities list of databases, so you can look through them/see if you have something similar - http://www.lib.ua.edu/content/databases/ .

I'd do a quick search for you myself on them, but don't have permission to use them over the summer.

Oh, and literature review sucks 😛 So have fun!

🙂

I'm in no position to say what rules apply when and to whom. I recently joined as my post counts show. It was just an honest question...I'm still learning the rules. 😳

We do not allow posts requesting homework help (generally only a problem in the pre-professional forums), nor do we allow solicitation for membership participation in research projects. Asking for guidance on where and how to do a lit review is completely different and perfectly fine.

So, using the above example, it's fine to ask "where can I find information on comorbid tobacco use and other drug use", but it's not OK to ask the psychiatrists, residents, and students to participate in your survey on their patients' (or their own) comorbid tobacco use and other drug use.

Simply putting into a google search...

"cigarettes gateway"

Yielded this as one of the first hits.

If you scroll to the bottom, you'll see plenty of references. Hopefully one of them will help.

Thanks, I'm not really interested in the gateway phenomena much, its more looking at the fact that many people being treated for various substance addictions are also smoking cigarettes which is diminishing the health benefits of breaking other addictions.

But several of the links on the wiki have relevant statistics in their demographics so they are helpful. I guess it didn't really occur to me to just find studies looking at other questions, but reading through their demographics to find whats relevant for me.
