What SMP? Not all SMPs have the same stipulations when it comes to linkage.

Crush the SMP (1) and engage in as many volunteer opportunities (2) as you can handle during the SMP. If you can't do 1, then 2 won't matter.

First, find out if you really need an SMP. Maybe you could do a DIY post-bacc. As for volunteering, I would wait because of covid.

What DO schools have you applied to? Your gpa and mcat are ok and its kinda early. You may hear something soon.

I applied to like 7 DO schools, basically any that don't require a DO letter. I had DO shadowing lined up in late March that obv got cancelled (took me 3 months to find it and get through paperwork etc). Would've tried getting a letter from that but the world clearly had other ideas.

SmPs can be risky. Our SMP is quite rigorous, but if you meet the requirements, you hit the ground running. Our basic scientists LOVE our SMP grads. Trouble is, it's a little more than med school lite. Its hard, but a great foundation. A friends kid was a 3.7 Chem major from a local pre med mill. Div 3 athelete, 4 yr letterman. Sub 500 MCAT. Ended up, they didn't meet the requirements. A DIY post bac is less risky, can drop courses, etc. Be prepared to work your a$$ off and you can do it. Good luck and best wishes!

I would add more DO schools. I'm sure they understand that its hard to get shadowing during covid. How about try shadowing MD and get LOR?

Thanks a lot for the wishes! Sorry if I'm misinterpreting this also, but the friend's kid you're referring to didn't meet the requirements to get into the SMP, or to matriculate to medical school after the SMP?

It seems majority of schools require a physician letter of some sort, and most require a DO letter. I did apply to one school that previously required the DO letter, but waived it for this cycle.
