I'm planning on applying to a few SMP's to begin Fall '12 while applying to medical schools within the same year. I was wondering how admissions committees look at SMP applicants/their progress.

Since you wouldn't get any grades until Dec/Jan, do you think the adcoms will go about this like "let's see how he/she does within the SMP before proceeding with the application?" With mediocre stats, I'm afraid that the SMP will lower my chances of interviewing in the Fall? Any opinions/advice on this? 🙄

Mediocre stats lessen your chances for fall interviews, with or without an SMP.

The bet you're making by applying to med school, during an SMP year, is that the med schools will wait for your SMP grades - that there will be time after your fall grades come out for you to still get interviewed. Frequently your home state public schools will interview you in the fall, and wait for your SMP grades before they make a decision.

If there's anything at all wrong with your app, other than the sole anomaly of a low undergrad GPA, then an SMP won't fix you. On the other hand, if you have a strong and compelling app on which undergrad GPA seems like an anomaly, then you're likely to be put in the "wait for fall grades" pile (which is what you want).

Best of luck to you.
