I'm in the process of applying to various SMP programs, but my MCAT score is lower (502). My highest is in Bio/Biochem and lowest is Chem/Phys. I'm retaking in the spring, but I'm wondering if my current MCAT score might hurt my chances. Im at a 3.5 overall and 3.3 science. I have 800+ hours of research experience, as well as research and volunteer experience. Im very set on the MD path, which is why I really want to do a program like these before going through the appliication cycle. I guess my main question is what effect my current MCAT score will have on my apps, even if I indicate that I will be taking it again.

If you're set on MD, then you need to retake the MCAT before considering the SMP.

An SMP is a waste of money unless you score significantly higher than your 502... Right now you’d probably be a borderline candidate for many DOs depending on your ORM/URM status

Im 100% retaking MCAT in spring, I just know the programs are on a rolling basis and fill up so I wanted to apply sooner than later but also dont want to risk not getting in because of a lower MCAT when I know im retaking and feel confident about raising it up.

I guess just to raise GPA and become a stronger candidate for MD school
Your major issue is the MCAT. The thing with SMPs is that you have to do really well (like >3.6) or its game over. And they are really expensive. Your cGPA isn’t that far off and you could probably do some DIY post bacc work to raise your sGPA. But with a 502 there is no sense in doing even that. And remember many schools average MCAT scores do you’d have to score really well. Why are you against DO? You’d probably be competitive at many DO schools right now.

If you're boning for MD, I'd post bacc + take the MCAT again. I don't think an SMP is necessary. It is too much of a risk and a 3.3 and 3.5 are not terrible GPAs. Pursue a post bacc, do well, get them both around a 3.6/3.7 and obviously do well on the MCAT.
