Just decided against Caribbean route. Will try to make post brief...

  • 27 years old
  • graduate of liberal arts college
  • B.A. in humanities after failed attempt at premed, poor GPA science and cumulative
  • Post-bacc premed done with retakes
  • sGPA: 3.3, cGPA: 3.0
  • MCAT is 26
Tricky thing is some classes (C's) were weird ecology classes, so no ability to retake! What should I do? I think DO school linkage SMP will be my best option, but with a sub 3.0 cGPA I don't know if I may be admitted to them. Another full year (fall 2016 - spring 2017) of science classes is an option, but my sister whom has perfect grades and test scores just went on the interview trail last year and got only one acceptance (GPA: >3.5), which makes me very nervous for what will happen to me if I don't have any linkage? Am I thinking logically here? I am getting a little old and have expectations to start a real career soon as well. Kicking ass in a SMP should at least make THAT school overlook my first college degree GPA?

Relax. During my first degree my science and cumulative GPA were well below a 2.8 (was a hard science major too). I took a few classes as a post-bac and kicked ass in them. I didn't have any problem getting in to any SMP's last year. If you have a nice upwards trend you will be good to go. However the MCAT might hold you back from getting in the better DO school linkage SMP's, unless your upwards trend spans 1+ years. I suggest you take a look at LECOM's post bac and consider retaking the MCAT if you want to get in to the better programs. I also suggest you continue to take classes before you start your SMP. There are students who are currently in the SMP where I am at, and students who have come straight out of undergrad are getting rocked left and right by the exams. I feel like the people who are succeeding here are the students who came in with upwards trends and already had their study habits in check.

Thank you for the reply. I just registered for a 20 credit spring semester full with retakes. Calculated sGPA post spring semester is 3.33! That may open some doors but sadly because of the late May semester end, likely nothing for the following fall. I would really like to be at DO SMP next fall arrrgh lol.

That shouldn't be a problem at all if your semester ends in May. I just checked my old emails and some schools like Tufts didn't respond back to me until June and I applied back in March - April. I highly suggest you apply early and reach out to the schools you are very interested in attending and tell them to wait for your spring semester grades to be finalized before making a decision. Keep them updated of your progress. Half way through the semester tell them how your midterms have gone. It shows interest and it will play a factor.
