What are the advantages/disadvantages of obtaining a Masters in Arts (like Loyola's program) vs a Masters in Science (BU, Georgetown, etc)? Is that something to consider when choosing which SMP to attend?

No. The linkage and matriculation rates are.

In the long run, will having a MA vs MS matter at all?

There are several things to consider when reviewing SMP options:

1) The coursework

If you're looking to create a stronger foundation in the basic sciences, you may want to consider the programs that only last a year. Only select a program with a focus that you would be interested in pursuing.

2) Research opportunities

For more hands on experience, the SMP's that offer research will take two years, on average. This can provide you with valuable exposure to an area of your interest.

3) Networking

If you have identified an area of interest, meeting the leading experts in that field can help you as a medical student and doctor.

4) Linkage Agreements

Some SMP's have agreements with medical school campuses that guarantee a certain number of interviews per class. If you earn a certain GPA and/or MCAT by a certain deadline, you may be eligible for conditional acceptance, depending on the campus.

SMP's can provide you with the preparation to succeed in medical school as well as a possible pathway to matriculate directly. For more information on SMP's, please see my article on the topic, link attached here.
