I graduated with a cGPA of 3.17 and sGPA of 2.9. I want to apply to an SMP program, but given my horrible stats would an SMP even improve my odds at getting accepted to a US medical school?
I have around 1000+ clinical hours, 2 semesters of undergrad research assistant, and somewhat decent clinical and non clinical volunteering. I would not like to resort to going to a Caribbean school.

When did you graduate?

What is your GPA pattern by year?
Freshman: cGPA-2.57, sGPA-2.308 (this was due to a D in calculus)

Sophomore: cGPA- 3.136, sGPA-2.7

Junior: cGPA- 3.5, sGPA-3.267

Senior: cGPA-3.38, sGPA-3.28

Somewhat of an upward trend and I graduated Dec 2022. I have been working as a scribe and volunteering in hospice since. As for research have not been able to find many opportunities.

Next question: why the suboptimal GPA? Poor study habits? Working while going to school? Other?

Research won't help you, btw. Don't bother.
My high school did not prepare at all, it was a breeze even the AP courses which no one passed. I was working as well starting second semester freshman year and throughout. Also I m not trying to make excuses but I have ADHD which I did not know I had until my senior year and this led to poor study habits. COVID online classes sure didn’t help.

Answer, do the s&p. There are medical schools that believe in reinvention.

Would the SMP be better than a post bacc in my case ? I know a post bac won’t raise my GPA enough since I already did all the science pre reqs.

It's not about the GPA anymore. It's about showing the you of Now is better than the U of then. Read my post on reinvention for pre-meds.
Just read your post, great information btw! I’m guessing SMP’s with linkage are better? I have been doing some research on the programs but just wondering if there is any info on the UVM smp. I can’t seem to find munch info on that one.

I recommend SMP with linkage. Higher risk but higher reward.

I met some of the UVM SMP students, it sounds like a good amount get into whatever program they're going for. The admissions team is super nice, you should reach out.

SMP's only work if you actually do well in them.

that's true, I'm sure I can do good in one, but I have also considered a DIY post bacc.
A DIY post-bac program is almost always less expensive. However, there are no linkages and also no masters degree, as you would receive with an SMTP. Also many SMTPs provide study skill support, which you'd have to work harder to find or get, even if possible, with the DIY postbac. Both can work in terms of reinvention and acceptance to medical school, but each has its advantages and disadvantages.
