SMP outlook/help

After taking a long, hard look at my undergraduate cGPA of 3.2 and sGPA of 3.1 at a decent state school with a strong upward trend- 3.7 in last 45 credits. I decided to complete an SMP program. I completed the program with a 3.8 GPA. The courses were just like first year medical physiology and pathophys. The same school has a med program that it T30. Classes are taught by the same faculty.

I was originally going to only apply to in-state schools but I don’t think that’s a good idea. My last MCAT was 2 years ago and was low 490s. I know I can do better than that because of my peformance in the smp w material which was much harder.

With a 510+ MCAT what would be my odds of mid-higher tier? Or should I just save the heartache and apply to
lower tier? Rural applicant with proven commitment to serving rural communities.

Not against DO by any means but if I have the chance, I am going to make the most of it. Any comments are welcome.

Make a WAMC thread when your MCAT is more than a theory!
Will do! I think it is more than a theory. Scored 129 on bio/biochem. Took the mcat before I finished organic which I got As in. Also before Physics where I got a B+. An SMP in medical physiology and biophysics should really help me out.

Also got a 121 in psych/soc which is easily fixable. Simply just underestimated it and did not study enough.

I suggest shooting for 513+ to get MD schools to have some real interest in you. 505+ will be fine for DO.

Bulk up on service ECs, and many of the MD schools that reward reinvention are service loving schools.

If you are a rural applicant, you should look up schools that have dedicated rural health opportunities. Learn about the National Health Service Corps and find out what you need to apply for it. Similarly HPSP. Learn about AHEC Scholars and find out which schools are pipelines.

Appreciate the reply! would those MD schools be in state schools or any in the nation that like reinvention? I’m from Ohio, I know it could be a reach but I’d love a chance at Ohio State. Not sure if that’s feasible with my history.

I don’t know anyone personally that has any knowledge on anything like this so I would be clueless otherwise, just guessing. That being said, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment for a stranger.

Once you get your MCAT score, post a WAMC, and I'll give you a list. The schools can range from Columbia and Vandy to Drexel and Albany
