Hi all,

Looking for advice on whether to apply to smp or postbacc programs, and putting together a school list. Will be graduating May 2018. TX resident.

cGPA ~ 3.0
sGPA ~ 2.7
MCAT- 499, 49th% (retaking in August)
URM (Mexican American)
Solid ECs. Volunteering, shadowing, research, leadership roles in orgs, mentor...etc.

GPA should be a little higher after next school year but not much.

So far I'm strongly considering...

UNTHSC- MS MedSci
UIW - BMS
LECOM- Health Sciences PostBac
PCOM- MSBS
BCOM- Foundations in Biomed Sci
VCOM- Grad Certificate Premed Program
RVUCOM- MSBS
LUCOM- MSBS

I know these are all DO schools but I'd also like to add some MD if I can. If an SMP/postbacc can help me get into a TX MD school, that'd be ideal. Also, some of the schools listed above don't offer federal financial aid, and I'd like to avoid private loans if possible.

Thanks!

TTUHSC in El Paso has a relatively new post-bac program. They guarantee you an interview at the El Paso campus and the Lubbock campus. It's a pretty sweet program; I am currently doing the Master's program here. Here is a link to it: Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

From their website, "Successful completion of this two-semester certificate program will assure an interview with the TTUHSC El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine"

Any idea what "successful completion" entails?

Pretty much just pass your classes, which is very, very doable

So I recently got my retake score back
Ended up with a 507. 124/129/126/128

Hoping for some post bacc/smp school list advice
Planning to apply ASAP.

My updated list so far:

UNTHSC- MS MedSci
TTUHSC El Paso- PostBac
Drexel-Pathway to Medical School
LECOM- Health Sciences PostBac
PCOM- MSBS
RVUCOM- MSBS
LUCOM- MSBS
EVMS- Medical Masters

Any others I should target?

Bump. Also for the TTUHSC post bacc, successful completion to be guaranteed an interview is passing all classes with a B. Just FYI.

as a URM, i think simply raising your GPA and applying to medical schools will suffice. Is your trend in upper level sciences very poor?

I have so many hours already that raising my gpa is a tremendous task. Upper levels sciences aren't great, but aren't terrible either. No real trend.

Is this the normal amount of smp’s people apply to? Also is my bcpm 3.5 considered low? I am a reapplicant, applied to almost 50 schools but having a bad cycle wondering if I should do an smp too (preferably ones with linkage)

I would not consider a 3.5 bcpm low, especially for post bac/smps

Basically everywhere a california premed can reasonably apply to LOL it costs $5000

How many do you think I should be applying to? Thinking of U Cincinnati, Tulane ACP, Drexel, and Temple so far

Couldn't give you a hard number. I'm planning to apply to as many as I can and then choose the one that's best for me.
