Hi guys,

I am a canadian pre-med student who is looking at all the options that are possible right now. I just heard about the Special Masters Program and I had few questions about it.

I graduated from undergrad in 06 (B.Sc. in Medical Genetics and Microbiology) and I am doing my Master's of Science in Neuroscience right now and will be graduating this June. I wanted to know, if (hopefully not) I don't get in this year, would you guys recommend doing SMP? Or is it for students who don't have their Masters degree?

My stats are Undergrad 3.7, Graduate 4.0 gpa and MCAT is 28P. I will be retaking the MCAT in a week (eeks!). I have pretty good EC, worked in hospital for over 10 years now (started in high school), involved in lots of school activities (clubs, government).....

Thanks!

My buddy did that,
He had a pretty good application (3.4 overall GPA and 31 MCATs),
First year, he only applied to Wayne state (stupid move I know, but that was his choice)... he got rejected.

During his year off, he enrolled into an SMP (part time, taking only 1 class per semester) and got into Wayne state the 2nd time applying.
Im pretty sure he didn't get accepted because of the SMP, he only took 1 class, but I think they accepted him because they had to reason to reject him 2nd time in a row

SMPs are 1 year programs to get you into medical school when your application isn't quite good enough. Whether or not you have a Masters is irrelevant. That being said I have no idea how Canadian Medical schools regard SMPs, more than half of SMPs feed primarily into the school hosting the program anyway, and of the ones that are left (Georegtown, Drexel, Cincinatti, and Loyola are the only ones I can think of) I have no idea what Canadian Schools think of them. Try asking the programs themselves, maybe?
