SMP's in Fall of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't applied yet but am planning on applying to Georgetown and EVMS. I'm also applying to Osteopathic schools so the SMP's will be my back-up

I haven't started on the applications for Fall 2008 because a lot of them won't come out until early 2008. I am currently applying to some SMP's for the Spring semester though and if that falls through then I already have a lot of materials together for the next application cycle. Wise 😎

which spring ones?

My Fall 08 apps are complete at EVMS, BU, Tufts, and RFU. I'm still waiting on the Georgetown app. Those are the only 5 I will be applying to.

Lets go ahead and two other things to our info! First off, if you've applied what are your general stats... Also, your complete date and once we start hearing our respond date...

So vahe99, when did you go complete at EVMS?

Actually, I got my complete notification from EVMS today haha.

My stats are low: undergrad gpa 2.9, grad (mph) gpa 3.7, mcat 25N, gre 1270. I have a ton of experience (clinical, research, health education, leadership, etc). I'm also retaking the mcat this April (I have a lot of room for improvement in the sciences, got an 11 on verbal).

when are the deadlines for the smps of tufts, evms, and vcu? when is the latest that i can take the mcats and still get it in the application for the fall 2008 semester?

Which SMP's allow you to enroll in the spring semester?

If I am not mistaking, BU allows individuals to enroll in the Spring.

I am currently applying to the IMS program at USF. My problem is that my MCAT is at the very low end for USF's program. I would like to take a MCAT review course, but the course ends in late March, while the application cycle is over in late February.

This time around, I would like to be prepared when I take the MCAT. Should I re-take before the application cycle is up? Or should I do the review course and take the MCAT in late March when I am prepared?

I think that UCONN also accept applicants for the Spring semester. However, I have heard/read from people on SDN that the program is very competitive but it seems to be successful in getting people inot medical school. From the website "Approximately 85 percent of matriculated post-baccalaureate students have received admission to medical school."

Isn't Tufts program geared toward people who "did not study the sciences to prepare for entrance into a health care profession" or am I just totally wrong?😕

Tufts has both a formal post-bac program and a SMP.

I though UMDNJ was only in the Fall. Could you please provide me with the website?

I've been putting my fall 2008 application off due to:

1.Filing for U.G graduation in January (earliest option)
2.Taking the GRE's
3.Never thought I'd have to do this

I am excited about the smp/M.S option though, b.c at 20 y.o theres no way I'm fully ready for med school

Question- Is it a bad idea to apply to the same school just different campuses same program? ie UMDNJ newark and stratford?

Tufts does have an SMP program with their Master of Biomedical Science (MBS). I'm actually sitting in class right now watching the immunology class [immunology is the only 'telecast' class, most of the rest of the classes are same class, same professor, different time]. For the first semester, the MBS students take biochem, molecular bio, cell, tissue, and organ bio, immunology, and intro to clinical medicine. Out of those, only intro to clinical medicine is an non-med student course. On the other hand, we don't take epidemiology/biostatistics, physical diagnosis, or interviewing [the last two are lightly covered in the intro to clinical med course].

Do you guys know if all of the SMPs require Organic II + Lab, or more specifically, if any will allow substituting biochem for it? Many medical schools now allow the substitution of biochemistry for organic II, which is what I was planning on doing-- but now I'm thinking that I will apply to several SMPs in January unless my MCAT is stellar.

I still have this coming (last) semester to take Organic II with the lab, but (for reasons 90% of people can understand) would prefer not to unless I have to. I did very well in biochemistry, and would rather take micro and molecular biology, since I feel like those are more relevant to medical coursework than second semester orgo.
