Sn1 vs. E1

How do you know weather a reaction is favored via E1 or Sn1 mechanism? I know both are made in a reaction, but there has to be a specific factor that tips it to Sn1 or E1.

If is a base its E1 if its a nuc its SN1

generally with sn1 and e1 the two compete with each other. Usually higher temperatures will favor the E1 though.
