Dental students,
Do you automatically become members of SNDA when you enter dental school (meaning no fee required) or do you have to get your membership on your own. The reason I am asking is because I know they have some good benefits, plans, etc.

Probably not since SNDA is primarily geared towards minority student advocacy. Maybe if you go to Meharry, since they founded SNDA, they would automatically want you to join. I would say ASDA membership if probably more prevalent among dental students. UOP automatically enrolls you when we start school, but I know at many other schools membership is voluntary.

Indeed. ASDA is far more prevalent than SNDA. Further, the ASDA membership is powerful since it has become an ADA student membership. The SNDA simply doesn't appeal to that many folks.

Most assume you will join if you are an URM, that said many ppl should join... it is a great way to get to know and appreciate other students around your school (such as linking upper classmen with lower classmen URM who may want someone to talk to about experiences) and the country and how few URM's there are in Dental School in the nation. True, it does not appeal to the masses for obvious reasons but the conferences are great, the community networking and volunteering opportunites are great. You should get involved all over dental school, SNDA, ASDA, HSDA, fraternities, student government, etc. Have a blast... I am almost sad my experience is over... 🙄 😀 I guess I have a little more time to enjoy life as a student...

Won't you be able to join all the little clubs in med school?

Thanks for the replies guys.

One of the reasons why I wanted to join ASDA OR SNDA now is because they give good/affordable insurance plans vs. the ones that dental schools give you. But at the same time, if when I enter Tufts this fall, I will be automatically an ASDA member, there is no need for me to pay myself now just to get the cheap health insurance, right!?
Tufts health insurance is sooo expensive! But for ASDA, it's about half of their price.
