We all know how Florida's population doubles in the winter because all the snowbirds arrive.

But are any physicians themselves snowbirds? I'm in residency now, but just thinking about my future. I could imagine it would be nice to spend winters somewhere warm. Does anyone know any active practicing physicians who have a snowbird lifestyle?

Just curious....

Currently rotating with one. Does the urgent care gig part time here (fl) and up north

Interesting, thanks for the reply....does he/she work at the same urgent care centers in FL and up north every year, or do they get a new contract each time? are they locum tenems, or do they actually have a contract that says they can work at a place for half a yr, then leave and come back next yr?

I worked with a neurologist in third year who was a snowbird. He'd be up north for half the year and then go down south from November - May and work at a community hospital doing consults.

I'm an oncologist and could easily follow 25%of my patient population year round if I spent my summers here and my winters in either Palm Desert or the Phoenix area.

But it's going to be much easier to do either as locums or in the UC setting.

Most people don't do something like this because they have other obligations (family, house, etc.) that make it tough to pick up and move cross-country for half the year. If you're single and willing to do locums contracts, it would definitely be doable though. There's certainly more than enough work here to go 'round in the winters!

There's an excellent thread by Cabinbuilder over in the Family Medicine forum for anyone interested in locums.
