I'm doing a one year bio masters program at Rush while reapplying to MD and DO schools. It is not a SMP. Anyone have any idea how this weighs in the minds of adcoms?

Any help would be appreciated.

Pretty much what I figured. I appreciate the input.

The masters at Rush is probably what you described as hardcore science classes (biochem, pharmacology etc) mixed in with intensive labs for learning research techniques.

And no, I do not plan on applying to top 20 schools. My cGPA is > 3.8, and sGPA >3.7. MCAT is lackluster at 29Q, but retaking in a few weeks. So unless I can up my MCAT by a good amount, I'll continue applying to low-mid tier schools.

May I ask why you think some schools see it as an "interesting EC?"

Ask this to Tildy and QofQuimica. They are adcom members here who say that's how their school views it.

I do not recall ever giving a personal opinion on this issue and I'm fairly sure I've not spoken about it on behalf of my school. My "school" does not have monolithic opinions about things like this as the admissions committee is composed of individuals with varying views, all of which are respected and considered in final decisions.

Regardless, I would prefer not to be quoted by name as associated with any opinion related to medical school admissions, or, if someone absolutely must do so, only by using entire posts of mine quoted verbatim. I appreciate that consideration. Anyone can PM me if they wish my opinion beyond what I have posted on a topic.

Now then, with regard to the original post, it is highly variable depending on the program and why you chose to do it. Getting a masters degree per se is not necessarily seen as a substantial part of an application, but there are exceptions to that. If you can explain why the masters program fit within your career objectives, that is better, in my personal perspective.

No two adcom members will hold the same opinion about your masters program and its value. You will need to consider whether it has value to you beyond admission to medical school and proceed from there.
