Hey,

When you fill out Med School applications, for the volunteering/extracurriculas/shadowing/etc. part of the application, do you have to give any contact numbers and/or certificate of proof that you volunteered there?

The reason I ask is partly because I was just talking to someone who told me that EC's in medical school applications are a joke, he said he volunteered for about 8 hours at a place and wrote down some 50+. He also just got in to med school...

Not that I would ever do anything like that, but I though it would be good to know, because as I volunteer I might need something like a certificate in the end ....

You're expected to give contact info. No, they're not likely to check. Yes, if they do check and you lied, you're 100% screwed.

Yes, people fudge their hours all the time. I think that this is much more common than anybody thinks, to be honest.

This. I wouldn't call it number fudging though all the time though. Some people, unless you are just that anal retentive, estimate the number of hours they volunteered by multiplying the weeks by hours per week. There is always room for error there like missed weeks and what not.

The point is don't make up hours b/c that would screw you for good but I'm relatively certain as long as it's reasonably close to what you did it's fine.
