So called "Stats" schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Maybe. But with those numbers, there is obviously something glaringly wrong to the adcoms if he didn't get in. Just my two cents...

sometimes there's a bit of luck involved too. I looked at your mdapps and this was your 3rd time applying. Most people apply once or twice. So did you have to apply a 3rd time because of being a "salty douche" ?

A salty douche?
hahaha, i know it wasnt meant to be taken literally, but for some reason i cant help but envisioning it.

yup. I think just to substantiate this - Wash U has a sorta BA/MD program called university scholars

this is their requirement for admissions to MD

  1. maintain a 3.8 grade point average (GPA) as an undergraduate student
  2. complete an application to the School of Medicine the year before entering medical studies
  3. achieve a total score of 36 on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
  4. complete a successful interview with the School of Medicine’s Committee on Admissions.
those are pretty high standards for a bachelors to md transition, imo

but its all good, they have great faculty and build great physicians. some schools have different philosophy in picking students - i guess theirs is more objective

Damn, and here I thought Bac/MD's were suppose to be the easy way of getting into med school. With those kinds of requirements for a bac/MD, you might have a better chance applying straight into Wash's MD program.

You will not. Completing AMCAS and having a successful interview aren't that hard.

Anyone ever get mail from Wash U cuz of MCAT? I was surprised to see a packet from them the other day. I didn't think med schools did this, but I guess if anyone would, it would be wash u. What do most ppl think of wash u? I'm considering applying, but I'm not sure...

That doesn't even make sense; if you need a high MCAT and GPA and also need to submit an application the year before matriculation and also need an interview, then how the heck is a BA/MD program different from just earning the BA and then applying to WashU?

what's "Wash U?"

as in what's the real name. there are so many washington's around that i have no idea what school you guys are talking about

They hit me up with a bunch of mail then they WL'd me this year. It's a great school though, I'll be reapplying next year. Check out the program.

One thing to consider; for the incoming class last year, the median MCAT was ~37 with an average of ~39, and the average GPA was > 3.9.

That doesn't mean you won't get in, but it does mean that if you get in you'll have to work your @$$ off just to say in the middle third of the class. Everyone who goes there was probably pretty much the smartest person at their undergrad, and they aren't complacent individuals. I was advised by someone on SDN who attended WashU to be careful of going there if you want to do a highly competitive specialty. While the bottom 1/3 of the class at WashU is still full of brilliant people, falling in the bottom 1/3 of the class at any medical school can screw you (or so I hear).

What are the stats required for tufts? someone said 3.5 gpa and what about mcat?

Sorry to be off topic, but how much does class rank and med school difficulty play in residencies? Ie, given two applicants with same board scores/ECs, one in bottom 1/3 at Wash U and the other in top 1/3 at GWU, which would do better in residency placement and etc?

hey batman,

I can only told you what I was told by a former WashU student, which is essentially that a middle 1/3 WashU student would probably beat out a top 1/3 (but not top 5-10%) student at a low/mid tier school. WashU claims that they've matched people in the middle 1/3 of the class into every specialty (ROADs included), which is good. The impression I get is that you REALLY don't want to fall in the bottom 1/3 at any school, but the reality is that 1/3 of people do. Like I said, some people at WashU in the bottom 1/3 were probably ~4.0/40 kind of people in UG... tough competition. I was checking out the MSAR spreadsheet for 2010/2011 and WashU has a 3.9/38 median, with a 90th percentile MCAT of 41! OMFG.

I guess those numbers are for accepted, not matriculated. But still, we know that for matriculants the mean MCAT is really high thirties with a GPA average of ~3.9.
