for a per diem job as a home infusion dietitian with Coram healthcare. I already have a consulting job lined up with my current hospital- but I am always on the lookout for other opportunities. I have never done a phone interview before and it was different. I am not sure I answered the questions the way she wanted me to. Also the interviewer said she was concerned with the fact that I will be in school and my availability. She said the job requires 10-15 hours a week and sometimes less, and with some weeks traveling to homes and some weeks no travel. They pay for mileage, tolls, time spent driving, and time spent in a patien's house- nice. She said I can work whenever I want to - mornings, evenings, weekends. I have to call patients, as well as the pharmD (for any TPN changes) regularly. I also get to do inservices for the sales reps and get paid for it. For those of you in pharm school-does 10-15 hours seem too much? This just seems like it would be a great opportunity to work with the pharmacists and home infusion as well as be able to maintain my skills as a dietitian. Will I be overextending myself? My other choice is to stay as a consultant with my hospital company and work when needed (for hospitals within the area for tenet/morrison's-$35/hr) as well as get an intern job with CVS (my good friend is a pharmacist with CVS), and work a day or so a week. I don't have a great feeling about the interview though. Thanks for any input. 🙂

10-15 hours for me would be too much, but it really just depends on you personally. I like having my free time in pharmacy school so that I can decompress and go into the next round of tests/subjectmatter really refreshed. I didn't work at all the first year and had plenty of time for rest and relaxation, so I never really felt overwhelmed by school. Several of my friends worked quite a bit and they were constantly stressed out.

It also depends on your class schedule... we get out pretty late in the afternoons, so it would put me working well into the evenings and I'm one of those people that needs a lot of sleep. 😀

If your weekends are free, you could probably do 10 hours on the weekends without much stress. I almost always studied during the week and kept the weekends free for family obligations and that kinda thing.

Maybe you should wait until you get the first couple months of pharmacy school behind you and then make a decision on how many hours your can work.

That was what I was thinking too. But I do need money, I guess it depends on the salary too.

I would keep the current job...How can you walk away from 35 bucks an hour especially on the tight student budget you'll be on? And you also said you have the CVS opportunity. To me at least, traveling to people's homes would be stressful. Traffic, weather, getting lost, rush hour, etc etc would take its toll. I just finished my first year and worked 8 to 10 hours a week. Some weeks, that was more than enough.

Thanks all for the replies so far. The lady from the home infusion company called me yesterday and said the salary was 25/hr and 50/hr for home visits. The more I think about it, it seems like it may be too much. I would also have to go up to Tampa some time by the end of the month for an orientation program at their headquarters, which seems like a hastle to me. Who knows- they may not even offer me the job- whereas the place I currently am at have already asked for my help for coverage one a month on saturdays-starting in aug as well as sometimes during the week. I'll keep you updated.
