Respect gets respect. If you paddle out and play by the rules, don't drop in on anyone, and let the obvious regulars get their waves, you'll be just fine. If you go out somewhere and aggressively try and chase waves and compete all aggro with the guys who surf that spot every day, you'll be in a little hot water.

I totally get that respect gets respect. I would never show up and go all Brazilian on anyone. I would just be super nervous I would **** up or get beaten for looking at someon wrong.

What if you can catch a wave from time to time but overall not the caliber of the locals? Will they chase you off?

If you paddle out alone or with 1 other person, hang out on the shoulder for a while and feel out the vibe, generally be a cool human being, and just act like the guest you are then you really should have no problems. Especially if you paddle out on a mediocre/smaller day or at a less "premier" spot I'd say no problem. Now if you paddle out straight to the middle of the pack on a good day and start paddling for everything, or for the best set waves, or dropping in on people, or put yourself in a situation where you are in over your head and are a safety issue, then you're gonna have problems. The biggest issue with localized spots is not so much getting harassed but more that you just aren't gonna get any waves 'cuz the local boys have it dialed, and they aren't gonna care if they drop in on you.

Salty. I am heading to San Diego area and have one day to surf. Where should I go?

When you gonna be in SD? I'd do Black's for sure unless you wanna drive up to Trestles. Either way let me know. Don't miss out on the epic craft beer scene SD has to offer.

You know, I keep thinking that surfing the endless summer would be an option.

Then again, I am of the ethnic background that I can get land in HI for $1/year for the rest of my natural days. Being a bum and camping on the land does have its appeal.
