So is always dropping everything the essence of being a happy med student?

Bleh, just feel like ranting. I just get the impression that even when people ask for feedback, they're not open to it and that politely worded requests through the proper channels just get ignored.

I know, I know -- I'm just a lowly MS1. I guess that's the point, huh? We're supposed to learn our place.

Editing to add that it's not really dropping everything, I guess -- it's most about not bringing anything up to begin with.

I'm not sure what you're asking/ranting about.

I am a little confused with what you are saying.

Umm, sort of a generalized gripe. I just feel like it's pointless to complain about anything because no one listens -- and, no, I really don't complain a lot. 🙂 I just sent an email to a professor about a test question and got what I interpreted as a very condescending response. That makes it the third condescending email that I've received since being here. Anyway, I know it's nothing more than typical enforcement of the hierarchy here. I mean what are we going to do? Leave?

Sorry -- just curious. Do you feel like your admin and professors are open to feedback?

Here's my rant....

House M.D. sucked this week. The show is starting to go downhill. That is all.

One day when I was PO'ed over something, probably minor, my old boss very calmly told me "before you make any response to this situation, you have to stop and ask yourself 'is this the hill I want to die on today?'"

I know it is frustrating being a med student, but realize that (and this is another med student telling you this, not a lofty professor) that in the long run, little of these things will matter. Sending gripes and complaints will often not make much difference one way or another in the end, and may serve to have people take your complaints less seriously in the future.

Just chill, realize it's part of the process and won't matter much down the road, and remember that if you can let some of this crap go, when push comes to shove you can say "look, I am not a complainer but I feel the need to speak up about this situation...." I promise you that stance will carry you further down the road.😳

IMHO, the best approach when someone gets condescending or defensive is to just let it go. And emails on test issues (rather than in person queries) tend to be more poorly received in general, I suspect.

I know -- thanks for the reply. 🙂 BTW, the 3 condescending replies I mentioned above were for a total of 3 complaints. Yeah, it all won't matter in the end, and I just need to, yeah, drop it.

Yes, you start at the bottom of the medical food chain and slowly work your way up. Even when you start practicing, there is a food chain. This isn't just in medicine; it's pretty much in any work environment. The people at the bottom usually learn to keep their mouths shut if they want to advance without additional difficulty. Sometimes the bottom-feeders are given an opportunity to "give feedback" and this is an opportunity to point out what you like (so it is continued) and very politely point out what isn't as helpful (so that if it's something the administration doesn't want, they have something to back up their opinion for getting rid of whatever it is for cost savings, etc.).

I thought I was the only one, I wanna see a drugged out doctor and some icky disease not this "feel better" crapola. House giving psych advice to a rape victim?? Puleeeze!

Yeah, I know. It doesn't make it suck any less.

Editing out the rudeness. Sorry -- I'm just in a bad mood.

I think Doctor Bagel is saying she/he is tired of being an antelope to a bunch of hungry lions.

Yep, some day. I'll be a nice lion. They all say that, don't they? 🙂

Bagel,
Just be the kind of lion who only eats the ones too foolish to stay with the pack.

What's the fun in being a lion if you can snack on a zebra or two?

*Sunny meditating- Become the lion*

To me med students are more like lion cubs. Profs are snacking on their own.

what a assface prof... you should definitely rip him apart in course evals, and after exams a nice letter to the dean might be in order... also, got an LCME recert coming up? they'd love to hear about some dickwad prof patronizing students with questions....

I agree with your approach, but I'm not sure that everyone thinks this (and some may say it and not mean it). Sadly, some people get their kicks from kicking other people around.

Yeah, gee, thanks. 🙄 I'll be sure to be an a&& when you're having a pity parade, too.

Our deans are just begging for feedback. Seriously. Apparently we've stopped giving as much feedback as the year progressed and they griped at us about it. It seems like every complaint we have is handled separately in "meeting with the deans" that we have every month. Our instructors seem to respond to our questions and gripes as well.
BUT we're in a bit of a different situation. Its the first year of a new curriculum and I think everyone is antsy about how its working out. Since we are the only ones who can really tell them how it is going, they are just begging us for our opinions so that it will go smoother next year. I think the instructors are nervous about what we will report to the deans and so they are trying to handle our complaints before it goes further.

Well, that's cool. It's also impressive that your school revamped the curriculum, which I'm guessing was also partially motivated by student feedback.

Could have been. We switched from the classical curriculum to a systems based curriculum. KU med has been doing a lot to try to improve its med center and school lately though. (spent 5 million dollars on a new heart center, is building a cancer center, etc) As a lonely state school (only med school in Kansas) it doesn't get a whole lot of credit, but it is sure trying.
