So here's a hypothetical question. Let's say I were a first year FP resident, and decided I wanted to switch into Neurology for PGY -II. Would my first year of FP qualify as an intern year for neurology. How easy would this be to do as far as matching into Neurology goes?

Also, I wanted to ask...when applying to Neurology programs do you apply for both an intership program and PGY-II neurology program at the same time. Or do you first match to your transitional/ internship year and then try matching into Neurology.

Thanks..still trying to figure some of this stuff out.

1. You'd need to compare your intern year as an FM resident against what the ABPN requires prior to starting as a PGY 2 Neuro resident. I have found the internship requirements in the past on the ABPN website, but was not able to find them in a quick search just now.
2. As far as applying to an internship + residency or just residency, that depends. If your current internship counts, then you just apply to a PGY 2 residency spot. If your current internship does not meet the requirements, then you'll need to apply to both internship and residency. Some Neuro programs are set up as advanced, meaning there is not an attached internship. If you are applying to this type of program, you apply to both an internship and the PGY 2 spots at the same time. Other programs are categorical and come with an attached internship. You just apply for the who cookie. Some programs offer both categorical and advanced spots.

You need to do six months of internal medicine, one month of peds, and one month of emergency medicine.

The six months of internal medicine do not have to be ward months. For example, I did ICU, rheumatology, IM clinic, Infectious Disease and these all counted as internal medicine months.

As an FP, you probably did peds, maybe EM?

That's not right. You need 6 months of Internal medicine, and a total of 8 months of a combination of Internal medicine, Peds, and Emergency.
