Long time lurker here in need of some sage advice from the experts.

I'm an MS4 applying to EM programs this year (obviously), and I was wondering if I should put "beer brewing" on my list of hobbies for the ERAS. You see, I really love to brew beer. To boot, I won a ribbon in our state fair for my beer. Applying for some other specialties I would think "Hell no, that would kill my chances", but most EM guys I know enjoy good beer and might appreciate it.

What do you think? Please comment with suggestions.

Hey, apply to Penn. We have a beer-brewing faculty member or two on the EM faculty 😎

Put it on - sure. Make it the focus? Definite NO! I had "herpetology" listed as I own a tortoise. It made for a few fun questions on the trail. Beer brewing should work the same. List it as a hobby. The blue ribbon becomes a good talking point if asked about it.

Use it on your ERAS and use it to pick up chicks. 👍

It is a science. I say use it.

One person said no out of 15 votes so far. I guess the question now is what kind of beer to brew for the interview trail...

Just be ready to speak intelligently about it. I predict it'll be one of your most frequently asked questions on the trail.

nice avatar, btw

For sure list it, that is where you get the best questions which lead to the best interviews.

I listed drag racing....spent many interviews just talking about cars! And a few interviews talking about my wife's clothes.

Absolutely list it.

Interviews are mind numbing for both parties if they have nothing to talk about. Truly, after about 2 interviews, you'll actually be able to see it on the interviewer's face when they're done with the standard questions and move on to something interesting to both of you.

BTW, Indian Pale Ale, clearly the best bet. 🙂

Take care,
Jeff

If I saw that on a CV, after reading through 25 identical CV's before it, your's would go in the "call for interview" pile. Anyone can take a test, read a book, and be taught, but an area of expertise like that puts you over the top👍
