Is it just me or is SDN particularly quiet this year? Reapps have any comparisons to offer?

I guess its a strange year for AMCAS and its possible schools are quiet. However, when II reports do pop up, dates end up being in Dec/Jan at a lot of the schools! Very strange and suggests a lot less people are using SDN, no?

Tame the strange, bro. If you look at school specific threads, many are active with lots of interviews and acceptances already.

bwahah. perspective, thanks, buddy.

but really, after the first wave of invites and crap, it does seem pretty quiet lately- perhaps just at the schools, i'm waiting on

Well II's usually does start slowly trickling out after the first wave(s) of invites.

Yeah. I think part of the impetus in posting this thread is probably my ignorance on how that process works. For wahtever reason, I thought the waves were quicker progressing. Meh. Its an unpredictable process though, who really knows how any of it is working

don't worry. you can always send in update letters if you start getting a little inpatient 🙂

A lot of schools have only scheduled interviews prior to Christmas so all the interview slots for next year are still available at a lot of schools.

Yeah, I think I might start drafting one. Thank you!

I suspect this is, in part, due to the delayed AMCAS verification times. I bet if you look at the date last year that 75% of all primary applications were verified and compare it to the corresponding date this year, it's shifted back by at least a few weeks. (This could be compounded by the fact that the average primary app was submitted later. After all, AMCAS didn't open up until 6/10 this year.)

I don't know for sure, but I would guess many schools wait to see what their pool looks like before sending out a bunch of straight rejections (except in clear cases).

I agree. I think, though some schools are filled up with interviews through December/January, there are many schools proceeding cautiously because of the verification quagmire.

Reapp here. Agreed that some school specific threads that were pretty active the past couple of years are much quieter this time around. It seems fewer people are posting. For example, the UNC thread was on page 16 this time last year, but is only up to page 6 right now.

Supposedly, this happens every year... The pattern on SDN seems to be lots of invites in the beginning and less and less as the cycle continues. A lot of posters have contributed that to lots of SDNers submitting early and very few submitting later. But looking back at previous threads compared to this year, a lot of the threads are shorter in comparison to their sister threads from the previous years.

I don't use reddit, but I hear people talking about it. Could it be that people are going to other sites for pre med advice?

Just a random thought about SDN being slower in general. I could be wrong

This is also very possible. I'm sure that the webmasters here keep statistics on typical numbers of active users in each forum and average number of posts monthly, etc. If they wanted to, they could confirm or deny this.

Yeah, its hard to say, but it does seem like 1) schools are a lot slower this year or 2) sdn has become less frequented.

Its pretty much impossible to say which way this is happening though lol. Maybe a combination of both

Possible. I use reddit though and go to the pre-med subreddit pretty often and it's not that well populated, so I don't think that's really it.

well, let's hope there will have some news tmro...Friday....Nov. 1st....

Is that a significant date in this process? Lol

not really...haha i was being sarcastic. Every week, i look forward to the thursdays/fridays, but it's been so quiet for so long...rejections are more likely come out on fridays thou...

Ahhh I know how you feel lol. Lots of schools are saying they will send decisions out in November lol

There was a giant spike in total applications last year (MD), over a 6% increase from the year before. That big of an increase hasn't happened in at least 10 years, maybe more. Theres no data yet, but it could be that there are less applicants this year than last. It tends to go up every year regardless, but since last year was such a huge bump maybe theres actually a letdown this year...maybe unlikely but who knows.

I'm afraid that's not the case -- I believe they are referring to the 2013-2014 cycle but I could be wrong. I posted this in the panic thread earlier this week (although from a different source): http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-10-24/medical-school-applications-enrollment-rise-to-records.html

This year seems much slower and it's already November...🙁

Its kind of confusing, but they're talking about the number of students who applied in the 2012-2013 cycle. Since the cycle from last year includes part of this year they call it 2013. They don't have those numbers yet for this year because the cycle obviously is still going and people will still be applying through the end of the year.

I think there's a really good chance it went up again this year, but it went up so dramatically last year that I think it might go down this cycle. We won't know for sure for a while.
