I'm taking Gen chemistry 1 fall semester, but I haven't taken a chemistry class since freshman year of high school. I only remember the most basic stuffs of chemistry - moles, reading a periodic table, atomic numbers - and I was just wondering if that's enough walking into the class.

I kinda don't want to study/be a gunner, but I don't want to walk into that class unprepared either.

Any advice?

Self studying is a waste of time, doubly so if you learn something wrong.

Gen Chem is painfully simple, and reminded me word for word of my HS chem class. Relax and enjoy the summer! 👍

It sounds like you should be fine. You could watch a couple of Khan Academy chemistry videos in your spare time.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago. I studied the periodic symbols, trends and basic formulas. I did fine. The first few weeks of Gen Chem I will cover that. It will help you. Buy your college textbook and read/study it lightly.

Or, work harder during the first few weeks of class.

Self-studying itself isn't bad. Pre-studying for med school is a one-way ticket to a wasted pre-burnout summer.

But if you feel that you are lacking a basic foundation upon which the course will build, there's no reason not to help yourself out. Just don't go nuts.

Make sense?

Well for me when I took gen chem 1 a while back i haven't taken chem for 2 years since high school and i never payed attention in HS and I didn't want to take some worthless intro chem course, so i jumped right in there and got an A.

General chem is not bad at all, It refreshed all my memory of basic chem like in the first couple weeks. You basically just gotta know how to set up equations/problems based off what your reading. Basic math is used.

Honestly I like what he does, but for some reason I just can't really take in the info he's giving, but other videos on youtube helps for me. idk why

I think that you would be fine just jumping right in. It might be scary at first, but it is just easy stuff. If you are a little nervous, do preread the first couple of chapters. :luck:

Wow! Didn't think I'd get so many fast/helpful responses!

You guys are right; I'm just going to enjoy the last month of my summer before freshman year.

I've been reading SDN since I was a High School Sophomore, so I guess the fact that I'm finally entering the pre-med game is bringing out the neurotic/gunner in me!

Thanks a lot guys!

Not all of his videos were created equal. There are so many good videos on so many topics out there. I wish that I had those resources when I was a younger thing. I would have been learning about nuclear physics in middle school, probably! lol

Since a sophomore in high school? You'll be fine, young premed. 😉

for sure, it's like that for everyone usually in the beginning, but they tend to realize they need to calm down

I just took Chem I/II last year and it had literally been over 20 years since I had any sort of chemistry class. I didn't remember anything more than the first 10 elements on the periodic table and some faint memories of the word stoichiometry, not that I could tell you what it was. I needed maybe 2 hrs studying/week for Chem I, 4-5 hours/week for Chem II. Got As both semesters.

In short: don't worry about it.

Agree with all the above posts. Gen chem will be fine, especially since most professors will cover review materials the first week or so of classes.
If you want to be safe, check the professor reviews at your school or on ratemyprofessor.com
