Hi all. With interview season in full bloom, this question is surely one that has or will come up in an interview. Many find it a difficult one to answer due to its sheer broadness. If you haven't seen it already, I found the below link that breaks it down and helps guide the interviewee to a structured approach. The brief article is written by an MD and is geared for pre-med. Ya, that's another good one to have ready to go.. I have been asked the "tell me about yourself question" several times and have found it surprisingly difficult to answer concisely and compellingly.

here is a little tip, when you are practicing say things about yourself that you would want others to say about you. If they were to ask your mom or bf/gf or whoever "Tell me about your son"
what would you want them to say about you?
you're basically bragging about yourself but at the same time telling a story.

The adcoms don't know you, don't always assume that they've read your personal statement or looked at your application. Introduce yourself to them.. there isn't a right or wrong answer...just be YOU. They mainly want to see how you present yourself and how good of a speaker you are.

I wouldn't go on to tell a story about yourself. It's more of an icebreaker question. The only way you can really mess up is by relisting everything that's on your application from beginning to finish and explain why you want to do dentistry, etc. That stuff will be answered later on in the interview. All you need to say is, "I'm ___ years old, i'm from ___, on my free time I like to __, ___, ___ and elaborate more on a specific hobby you're interested in if you want. Don't spend 5-10 minutes on that first question.
