Well, since we're all just waiting for March 18th, I thought I'd look for some ideas...

Mrs.PsychDoc and I will wind up our Sundays with the folks at Downton Abbey this week, and we finished Broadchurch 2 weeks ago. Waiting for the new season of Orphan Black.

I've heard I should be watching Homeland.

Other ideas?

What are you going to be watching?

I just found out about Justified (FX). Binging on Amazon Prime at the moment.

Going through Veronica Mars for the second time, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the 7,000-th time (more or less).

Homeland is good, but it is very much how the US security services see themselves, rather than perhaps an objective reflection of reality. Also psychiatrically-savvy people will snicker-snort in the first episode when the main character is revealed to be surreptitiously taking diverted clozaril for her bipolar.

Still, sympathetic portrayal of ECT later on, so not all bad.

Buffy is the best. That's how I got through my doctoral program. Highly effective coping. On a related note, I named our little feral/adopted cat Buffy the Rodent Slayer when she was a few months old and looked up at me one day with her adorable little face just covered in blood from the little mouse she was feeding on. She's so cute.

I actually had a cat for a while named Miss Kitty Fantastico. How's that for an obscure Buffy reference?

This season is far more meta than usual.

The editing makes Ben sound like a really demanding therapist "You need to be more open with me."

I start to feel bad for the guy, but then I remember that he gets to have sex with three women in Jamaica next week and I'll still be sitting here running 15 minute med checks.

+1 Downton Abbey. Starting season 5 this week!

Will also catch up on the newest season of walking dead, game of thrones. Also this obscure called TURN about spies during the american revolution.

Clinic and consults are so busy I have no time to prepare for Daredevil, which I will watch even if I have to call in sick. I'm crying at work on a daily basis at this point. I've been debating whether it's worth it to try watching Jessica Jones.

Buffy! YES! :woot: :clap::soexcited:

My recs:

Long series:
Outlander (Starz, season 1 available On Demand)
The Americans (FX, 3 seasons in the can, Amazon?)

Short series:
The Honorable Woman (Maggie Gyllenhaal, streams on Amazon)
The Fall (Gillian Anderson, streams on Netflix)

Jessica Jones was really great, I highly recommend it. Daredevil started off extremely good but kinda lost me by the end of the season, hopefully season two can rebuild some steam. The Flash I found a bit slow at first but really got into it by 1/2 way through the season and would also highly recommend on the list of Netflix superhero shows.

Somewhere on Netflix and/or Amazon Prime...

Better off Ted
Sherlock
Durham County
The Newsroom
Grace and Frankie
The Delivery Man
It's always sunny in Philadelphia
House of Cards
Suits
Longmire
Jane the Virgin
Arrested Development

For those who like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, check out Peep Show (on Netflix currently). A fantastic British show that is also about terrible human beings being themselves. Endlessly quotable, though, uh, definitely not kid-friendly.

The same duo did a more traditional sketch show called That Mitchell and Webb Look, which can be found in full on YouTube. If you have seen links to that bit with the Nazis and "Hans, are we the baddies?" circulating it is from that program.

I just can't get in to any of those CW shows with the middle school soap opera vibe. I find the actual comic books with Green Arrow, Superman, and The Flash more mature in writing about relationships. I did watch all of Smallville, some Arrow, and half a season of the Flash because I love super hero stuff. I end up fast forwarding through 2/3 of each episode just to watch the action. I do love the main villain in The Flash. Maybe I'm just elitist like the comic book guy on The Simpsons.

Finished downton Abbey. I hope they make more or have a spin-off series or something.

OMG I missed this before. Aww she's bringing you food so she can teach you how to eat like a cat, the little darling. I just adore kitties. 😍 (one of our current adoptees is a black cat I named Ligeia after my favourite Edgar Allan Poe story 😀)

Not really bingeable since it's airing right now, but anyone watching American Crime Story (The People V. OJ Simpson)? It's not as good as I hoped it would be given the reviews, but it's fun to watch. It hits exactly the right level of buffoonery while still being a drama. OJ is portrayed as befuddled and naive. Shapiro is played by John Travolta who looks like he's wearing some sort of mask and is over-acting to comic effect. David Schwimmer plays Rob Kardashian in a comically earnest way (you'll hear some variant of "Come on Juice, you're the Juice!" a number of times).

I'm right now bingeing Always Sunny. It's not the best show to binge because it's sort of a quick hit and it's over. Too much stimulus to watch over and over.

30 Rock is the perfect bingeing show. I'd watch it now if I hadn't just done so. Some of the political stuff in it is very topical (e.g., the Unwindulax episode).

I agree with all the other recommendations. I binged Malcom in the Middle recently and was surprised by how much I liked it. If you haven't seen Mad Men or Better Call Saul, those are great (Breaking Bad was too much for me, although I watched the whole series). America's Test Kitchen is on Netflix now, too. Nothing more relaxing than that.

I just finished Downton Abbey last weekend, and I thought my life was over when I came upon a new BBC adaptation of War and Peace syndicated in the US on Lifetime. It's only 6 1.5 hour episodes, so kind of like one season, but man, does BBC do a good costume drama. It's shockingly faithful to the original material, too, whilst streamlining some of the uber-philosophical bits.

Superstore is a new comedy that's pretty good too.

Depends on how behind the times you are. I concur with a lot of suggestions.

Fargo
30 Rock
The Knick
The Wire (Blu Ray!)
Breaking Bad
Buffy (OF COURSE!!!)
Angel (if you like Buffy, though they're different)
Sopranos (recently out in blu ray)
Battlestar Galactica
The Office
BoJack Horsemen
Hannibal
The Killing (it's slow but gets good)
Rectify
Damages (at least the first couple of seasons)
Game of Thrones
Peaky Blinders
X-Files
Orphan Black
AND -------- Borgen!

If you like Downton Abbey, you should check out Gosford Park. Same writer (but way better writing), same themes, Maggie Smith plays basically the same role, directed by the late, great Robert Altman.

It's the absolute perfect rainy day movie.

Rewatching the single season of Firefly is always a good idea.

Also the new House of Cards.

And why not a LOTR extended edition marathon for good measure? ( please no Hobbit)

Hard to binge since it was just one season, but it is on Netflix, but I recently really dug Strange Empire. Hyper-stylized Canadian Western. Think Deadwood written by David Mamet but all the lead characters are women of color and/or neurodivergent.

The circus that is the primary election... duh
I remember when I couldn't wait for the debates to start—and when I was frustrated that there were going to be so few Democratic debates.

Now I've hit the buffet table and I'm sick.

EDIT: But like any good soldier at an all-you-can-eat buffet, I am actually turning on the Republican debate starting in 10 minutes.

Oh, another one I enjoyed that streams free on amazon prime is The Man in the High Castle (based on the book of the same name by Philip K Dick).

Very high quality production. The first couple of episodes made me concerned it was going to be too lovey-dovey, but it ended up being quite good. Now, I'm not saying the level of Mad Men good. But it's up there with say Prison Break. Actually it's a bit like Prison Break meets Lost.

PGY-1 here, a few recommendations!!

Doc Martin (Netflix)
I only recently discovered this series, and it's wonderful! Surgeon develops a blood phobia, goes to the port-town of his childhood to be their new GP, laughs and drama ensue! (Bonus: characters in need of psychiatry, and a character that is a psychiatrist later in the series)

Transparent (Amazon)
A work of art, and a total mess. Retired and divorced, the main character works through coming out as transgender to a large/complex, wealthy, tumultuous Jewish family. Great writing, great acting.

Superstore (Hulu)
This one is vaguely like The Office. Somewhat formulaic, diverse cast; new episodes have been coming out weekly.

I've also been watching Lucifer, Fresh Off the Boat, Rick and Morty (last fall), and New Girl (not that good anymore sadly).

Good luck to all y'all waiting for The Match! Enjoy the calm before the storm!

I really like daredevil and Jessica Jones. I enjoy that it feels like the "real world" for the most part and then the overt superpowers stuff feels a little more surprising/exciting when it happens compared to a typical super hero movie.

Sounds promising. Haven't dipped my toe in that genre since Black Books.

I'm on a Better Call Saul kick now that it's on Netflix.

I really enjoyed Doc Martin, especially the early series.

I missed it when I was in junior high, but I just started watching Twin Peaks on Netflix. Seems binge-watch worthy so far.

I second the recs for The Killing although I lost interest after the third season. I really liked Season 1 of Downton Abbey but I so started to hate that show in season 2 and on. So little Sherlock and so much Downton Abbey -- why BBC?

The first season is great. The second season kind of falls off a cliff creatively when the network forced David Lynch to reveal the identity of the killer. The
rapidity of the collapse of artistic coherence is only equalled by things like the later half of the third season of Battlestar Galactica.

Lately I've been watching In Treatment on Amazon Prime (3 seasons available). I've enjoyed it so far. Really liked the first season, don't like the second season as much but it's still good.

I'm missing Breaking Bad, so I might be doing another rewatch of that sometime in the future...

Looking forward to the next season of Better Call Saul coming out, though I'm not sure when that'll be.
