Someone asked this question on another thread. Between that and the thread in the pharmacy forum about the student with Asperger's, what's your experience?

children with severe developmental disabilities often live with their parents but move into group homes or institutions as adults, as their caregivers age.

Yes, and the high functioning ones (for example Aspergers) end up becoming Entomologists, mathematics professors, astrophysicists,, ...Or Napoleon Dynamite. 😀

I've had a number of cases where they present with depression due to their difficulties with social functioning. Some struggle to live independently; in a couple of cases I've had to basically make the diagnosis in middle-aged individuals who were still living with frail elderly parents, and went into complete tailspins when dad passed away, or mom went into a nursing home. Can be a tough situation. For younger adults I am aware of some community resources for adult PDD, social skills training, etc. Look diligently and you may find them where you are. But it can definitely be an area where people fall through the cracks.

The new virtual world is really helping some of these 'higher functioinng adults.' I have a guy who makes a living off of warcraft, second life and several other online pursuits. He also gets social security, lives with his parents, has not a shred of interest in socializing in the 'dirt world' and gets along wonderfully.

At first I felt the need to fix him but as I was convincing his parents that he was ok, I became convinced myself.
