Do you study at school, home or somewhere else?

Home just doesn't work for me...too much distraction with the computer (SDN) or TV.

I've been looking for different locations, and after going to a few different locales, I've decided on Panera's. Other than a few periods where they do a lot of business (lunchtime), it's usually pretty quiet with a lot of people studying, reading, whatever. Plus it is wireless if I really need my laptop. It's also close enough to home that it takes but a few minutes to get to.

What about you?

My room, alone for hours on end....take occasional breaks to go outside. It's truly a miserable life.

I usually stay pretty good with not going on the computer, and the house is usually quiet on the weekdays.

Barnes and Noble. I haven't been able to get there as often as I would like. And while I'm there I have to take little breaks to read some fun stuff, too.

Empty. Classrooms.

Calculus for Biological Sciences nearly got the best of me until I found a prime spot. You see, you'll never know the value of chalk/marker boards until you have them at your disposal. Truly awesome.

Take your computer, put on a little Pandora, and you're set.

(Don't let me down.)

Well at school, I have a single dorm room, so i do all my studying in there. the privacy to study/do whatever is wayy better than the double I had.

At home, the past few weeks while I've been studying for the MCAT, I have a table set up on my porch, which I use and it works out great for me. I find that the outdoors really keeps me awake and prevents me from falling asleep on my textbook (like being inside can do to me)! 😀

I think my house is the worst. I get sooooooooooooooooooooooo sidetracked with everything. I have to study in school or on my balcony. Once I enter my house I rather watch t.v. or just stay online. If I'm at school I just force myself to study I should find out if I have ADD lol

my room, the kitchen counter, study room, library... oh wait you guys were talking about studying not ... 😉

at home, my room, in between classes in the lib. But when I take the practice test, I would do the exact same thing as I'm gonna do on test day n head to the lib imagining it as the test center.

Well my apartment used to be the best place for me to study until I had some over extended houseguest then school became my place of study. But I'm moving and the guests are not ...YAY!!!!!!! I can have my little corner back.😀😀😀

Haven't found a spot that I love. Libraries, at home, and at coffee shops are meh.. So far, the library is the most effective.

Starbucks works for me, theres one nearby which doesn't get a lot of business, but its rather large and has a lot of chairs/tables.

Panera is usually too loud, plus everything in there is real expensive and I don't wanna spend the money.

I frequently study at home when my husband is gone (when he's here I tend to want to do other things). Otherwise, it's usually at one of the restraunts on campus or outside. I adore studying outside, because most people in the city choose not to. It's very quiet and being close to nature when I'm studying nature is very harmonious to me. The only problem is during the summer it gets waaaaay too hot in Texas.

At home in front of the TV. I have bad habits, I know. 🙁

LOl. I wish I could try your methods.

And I wish I could easily break some of my bad habits. 😉 If wishes were...

Seriously, I know I'm going to need to buckle down for med school so I'm trying to spend less and less time reading/studying in front of the TV. So far though, I've not had much luck. 🙁

This upcoming Fall semester I'll be teaching a few Organic and Gen. Chem labs--I'm going to try really hard to not grade them in front of the TV. Perhaps I can slowly break at least this one bad habit!

i typically study at starbucks. my days during this summer semester goes like so:

wake up at 6 - hit starbucks by 715-730ish. study until 12, or until i get so on edge from too much caffeine and no food. come home and eat (i live near several starbucks). go to school and study until my afternoon classes start. come home, bum around the internet, play with the wife 😀, do stuff around the house, bed by 10. rinse and repeat.

Good luck. I still don't see how youdo it. I have to wait until my daughter is gone to bed before I can even think about studying.

I'm impressed. I can't get up no earlier than 7, which is why I'm relocating to five minutes away from school. 😕

having to be at work at 630am has changed my lifestyle quite a bit. plus, my wife wakes up at 5-515 3 days a week to go to the gym.

the body can get used to anything .

I'm also finding waking up at 6 to be a HUGE pain. Takes me a good hour to get out of sleep mode that early in the morning. Probably because I don't think I've ever got up that early since I was in high school, haha.

And going to bed at 12am doesn't help either.

yea, its weird though. i find that if i wake up early and am productive from the start, it sets the tone for my whole day. if i sleep in and bum around all morning, i'll more likely than not have a not so productive day.

Me too. I'm a night owl, somehow I think its so kiddish for me to go to bed at 8 or 9 pm. lol

I agree...but 6 am?? UGHHH I would just be miserable lol.:scared:

What's awesome is that everyone's like, "Ewww...6am. Please stab my eyes out." Yet, all of us will be on call for 24 hours and--going on a few days of no sleep--will be roused at even worse times than that.

I'd say, CHERISH 6am! Ha!

OMG, I LOVE 6am, as freakish as it may sound. But I've always been a morning person. It's really nice to be able to wake up before everyone else; the house is quiet, computers/printers/desks are free for use, etc. The possibilities of annoyances/obstacles are immensely reduced. At this hour, studying at home is much more feasible. Plus, I find that I'm more mentally refreshed if I review for an exam the morning of, rather than the night before (this is particularly enhanced when combined with a good night's sleep!).

And even if I only had enough time to get only a few hours of sleep, I would muuuuuch rather just go to sleep early and wake up early, study, and go to the exam, rather than stay up late studying, and have to wake up 15 minutes before the exam.

But that's just my personal preference. 🙂

Oh, and I TOTALLY agree with the comment about empty classrooms!! Absolute best place to study, in my eyes. You've got desks, electrical outlets, whiteboards/chalkboards (with sufficient markers/chalk/erasers), projectors/computers (sometimes), and a good sized room if you've got a big study group.

we're morning-people-study-outlook twins. 😀

yay for dawn! yay for sleep! yay for caffeine!

oh yea, you just reminded me of another waking-up-early perk! dawn can be soooooo gorgeous, it's kind of a bummer that so many people miss out on it.

I am not bummed whatsoever. If it's a good night out I'll see down on my way to bed.

I wake up around 5 or 5:30 the past two weeks usually. (If I'm crazy 6)
Shower and eat a little something...ok a lot of something. Then I drive into the med building and go to my learning community. Brew a pot of coffee and start studying till my first class. Once more people start showing up I move to the library or the "dungeon" for complete silence. Our building was built with technology in mind so there are plugs everywhere. Dry erase boards everywhere. Projectors everywhere. Everywhere I go seems to have the brachial plexus on the whiteboard with "do not erase"

ive gotta get into this studying in empty classrooms thing. sounds fantastic.

yea, something about the morning really appeals to me. i think its because there arent that many people around, the temperature is usually perfect, its quiet...i know it sounds crazy but i think i am more 'alert' at 630am than i am at lunchtime.

LOl I think I don't like 6 am because I usually go to bed at 4 am lol.

Depends on what I'm studying...

I just finished all of my "math" classes like Calc II and Physics, but when I did study, I could study anywhere like Starbucks or outside somewhere.

If its any kind of chemistry (especially when it was OChem)? oh boy, I needed it silent! So the library with my ear plugs in, 🙂 haha

Bio classes? depends on when the test is 🙂 usually with Pandora on or at the library with my ipod...Sometimes the beach!

You and me both.

No matter what we will all have to adjust to different time schedules in med school/residency, but what a ride it will be 😀.

LOL. You know I actually don't think it will be a real transition during residency, but med school on the other hand will be hard.

The majority of my studying has been done at work. I'm a paramedic, and do a lot in the front seat of the ambulance. I study in the station, but my partner swears I'm easily distracted. At home, I'm usually on the couch.

When in group....classrooms are king (I agree with the whiteboard/chalkboard comment earlier)

Alone, at home when quiet or at the library on the quiet floor or in a arboretum where it's quiet and shady. Pretty much any quiet peaceful place will do. I can't lie down though. If I try....😴

Scheduling my down time is VERY important to my success. I need to know that I will have a blissful hour without study in ex: 34 minutes. When I really procratinating I use the $20 rule. I take a $20 bill out of my wallet and set it on the table. I set a goal time to stop studying. If I get up from studying at any point before that time (other than to go to the bathroom) I have to tear the $20 bill up. Next time, it's $40. In two years and through the MCAT....I never tore one up. Somehow that works for me, I hate wasting money!
