So, who likes the out-of-state folks?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Hi all,

I'm finalizing my list of schools and I have a quick question about out-of-state friendly schools. I'm a CA resident with a below average GPA and above average DAT. I'm not looking for a "what are my chances" so I won't get into specifics but basically, I want to apply to a range of schools so that I will have a chance of getting in. I am considering applying to a few of the schools below but I'm not sure which ones. Which ones are more out-of-state friendly and are all around stronger clinical programs? I spent 4 hours on SDN last night searching this stuff (no joke!). Btw, I already have BU, NYU, Tufts, and those common high out-of-staters down.

Thank you!! 🙂

Louisville-Yes
Nebraska-No

I'm not sure about the other ones.

Tennessee No. It's either in state or Ark residents. I believe Maryland accepts a decent amount of out of staters but you might want to check the regions from which they accept. Some seem to only accept regional out of staters.

Thanks guys.
So I'm keeping
U of Pittsburgh
U of Maryland
U of Louisville

My list is still at 24 and I really don't want to apply to that many schools. Part of me wants to because of my low GPA but I'm worried that it won't look good. Also, I feel like it's a bit overkill. I wanna get rid of at least 4 more schools but I'm having a hard time deciding between

U of Michigan
SUNY Buffalo
U of Washington (does being a CA resident help with this?)
Virginia Commonwealth U

Any more input would be so appreciated!!!

VCU has higher statistics, but does accept a fair number of out-of-state students.

No to Washington, they are definitely a state school: http://www.dental.washington.edu/education/pdfs/DDS_Admissions_Statistics.pdf

I think it will be more helpful if you give us your list of schools along with your GPA and DAT.

I didn't want to turn this into a "what are my chances thread" bc I think it'll just make me more stressed out 😀

Thank you all for your input. The reason why I even had U of Washington is because first of all, I've heard great things about the school and secondly, my mom wanted me to apply there because it's "close" to CA. But I guess it's not worth the extra $ if my chances are low. Plus my list is at 22!!! I feel like I still need to do some narrowing down!

haha sounds like my family. **sigh** if only it were that easy.

uhhh anymore input guys? like seriously i wonder why my state does not even have a freaking public dental school.........................

So not fair. You reside in California which has the most dental schools and you have the resident advantage to most of the these schools.

I live in Pennsylvania and the two state schools here (Temple, Pittsburgh) admit more out of state students than residents, basically giving no advantage to my residency. It's like c'mon hooka brotha up -- take care of your own kind! 😡

Will you out of state applicants throw us PA people a bone and not apply here? Pretty please???
