Hey all! I kind of struck out this year with admissions: I got into one PhD program, but as of now, no funding.

Two questions: Should I for sure reject this offer? They say they're trying to find funding, but don't know anything of yet. It's a top three school in PH.

Otherwise! Any suggestions for PhD programs where I could do social science/qualitative research in global health that are a) fully funded and b) don't require a master's?

Thanks!

My personal opinion is that going to school that isn't funded is a bad idea. Job prospects after graduation can be a bit shaky, so taking on debt is a big risk.

While it doesn't sound like the best option right now, trying again for next year's cycle may be the best option. Do all you can to enhance your research credentials by working with as many researchers as you can.

Every school has different policies regarding funding, some universities require mandatory funding for all students, some universities have no requirements. Most universities, will allow exceptional students to be admitted to their program without a master's--it's worth reaching out to those schools (go to the faculty members you're interested in working with) that say it's a requirement. Often times, all you need is an advocate on your side and that requirement can be waived.

Good luck.

Harvard, Brown and Yale Chronic Disease Epi-SBS are the SBS programs I know of that guarantee funding for everyone for multiple years. That's a tough situation to be in! I wish you luck in making a decision.

Hey @nycstdnt, JW what school are you talking about? I was thinking of a PhD in social sciences/qualitative research in the (distant) future also. I thought most programs provided full funding to PhD students.
