Given the recent recommendation on here to graduate and go out and do your own cases I wanted to ask how realistic of an option is this if you intend to do a fellowship. It seems to do complex peds you need to be at a children's hospital which is almost always associated with a residency program. Are there significant opportunities to work solo following fellowship? I suppose the same can be said for complex hearts as well.

Nope. A friend of mine is looking to hire a peds heart anesthesiologist to start a pedi heart program in phoenix.

Nope-- few and far between. There are several children's hospitals with small affiliated residency/fellowship programs so there may be many days you don't have a resident or fellow. But 100% solo would be hard to find.

I think there are plenty of places where you either work with a resident or do your own. I think that is a fine compromise.

We do solo complex peds/ neonates. No residents. Even looking for a doc. If interested shoot me a pm

Sounds encouraging. I think that was one of my few qualms about going into a fellowship. Glad to hear even at academic centers there is some room for soloing. At our place all the pedi is with a resident, which is good for me now.
