Hello all,

I found this program while online the other day.

http://www.ololcollege.edu
http://www.ololcollege.edu/academics_rev04.html

If the website is to be believed, and the person I talked to on the phone is on the up-and up, this really sounds like a good fit for me.

The class structure sounds interesting. They also build in a seminar and doctor shadowing into the program.

PROS-
1. I can afford it (with their payment program).
2. Those sciece classes could boost my BCPM GPA.
2. I could work right at the hospital as a scrub tech
3. With the credits I already have, I could finish in three semesters.
4. They seemed to know there stuff when I called and inquired.

Of course there are cons.
1. Baton Rogue (no one get offended, but I love Texas and Indiana)
2. It's an undergrad program.
3. Has anyone ever heard of this place?
4. Being affliated with a hospital, the school has a heavy "allied heath" focus.

I especially like that Oncology and tumor cell bio class. Microbiology fascinates me and even if med school does not materialize that's what I would want to do.

I think I'd double major in "Human Medicine" and Biology.

What do you guys think??? Use this as a first step???

I'd appreciate it if some of you (ahem Phil_A, exmike, liverotcod, SingingDevil 😀 would check it out and give your honest opinion.

Agape

Hehe...I've been called out 😛

Sounds reasonable to me. A lot of the coursework is probably shared, so it shouldn't be too hard to get the classes for both.

It sounds reasonable as a first step. Personally, I would do something additional at some point. I would definitely do a special masters/certificate program even if it's during your first application cycle. I wouldn't put too much weight on Our Lady of the Lake alone, but who knows, maybe it'll be sufficient.

All good things

1: no comment
2: not necessarily a bad thing
3:
4: not necessarily a bad thing

Some thought/questions/concerns:

1) Would you actually be part of the post-baccalaureate premed program? Or is this just a do-it-yourself, 2 more Bachelor's degrees postbac?

2) It sounds like a career-changer postbac, but the BS in Human Medicine courses seem to be a good selection. The courses also seem to be straight out of the Biology course selection, except the courses are more specific.

3) I'm a little concerned that I didn't find a single profile from Our Lady of the Lake on MDapplicants. Then again, my alma mater and the school I currently attend have strong premed programs and there aren't too many MDapps profiles on them either. Not that being on MDapps is some sort of criterion, but just don't expect to have adcoms think of Our Lady of the Lake in the same way they would with other established postbac programs. Of course, if this is merely a first step, I don't see how it could be bad. As long as it's a legit/accredited school and you're using it as a first step, heck why not. Sounds like it'll work out well for you.

4) If your undergrad GPA is low, then it will be helpful to take upper-division science courses there. Also, definitely take the shadowing class.

Those are my initial thoughts
