I took the DAT today. AA 19 TS 20 PAT 16
I have had similar experience with the DAT as other people here who have posted, just want to highlight a few things.
The Test
Biology. I would suggest having completed Anatomy before taking the DAT, the first two semester of biology didn't really cut it. If you have not taking anatomy, I would suggest buying Examkracker's biology. They do a great job explaining the systems that are not covered in the first two semesters of biology. I got a 21 on this section.
G-Chem Topscore was very similar.
O-Chem Topscore was very similar
PAT I thought I did much better on this while I was taking it. I was very surprised when I found out my score; I thought I was going to get an 18 on it. The angles were ridiculous like everyone said. DAT achiever does a great job on this subject.
Cube counting should be mastered for the PAT since there are only 2-3 questions per cube on the real DAT. My 16 was at 50.1%
RC My three passages were on Cell Communication, Magnesium and herbal medicine. The passages were relatively easy, although there was more analyzing on these passages than ones I took on Topscore/Dat Achiever.
I would suggest reading articles from Science, Nature and New England Journal of Medicine.
QR I was actually surprised on how easy the questions were. I had a couple trig questions and stat question but beside that they were all doable. The best advice for this section is to skip the questions you don't know how to do. Kaplan's GRE/GMAT math Workbook is excellent for anyone having trouble with this section. I got an 18.
Mock DAT Programs
10 - Must buy
1 - brutally awful
DAT Achiever (9/10) This is the best DAT test prep program you can buy. The explanations are wonderful; there were tons of questions that were analogous to the real exam. The PAT is difficult, so it makes the real PAT seem easier.
Top score (8/10) the interface is the most similar to the real thing. The PAT on this is easier than the real thing; I was getting 18/19's on the practice tests. Their explanations are not very good and reviewing the test is a pain especially for the PAT since they don't give a 3D solution.
KSF (1.1/10) this program is just awful. On their PAT exams I was scoring in the 20's. Their questions repeat, so if you take a different test you'll get some repeat questions--very annoying. Their RC is ridiculous because it is done in 10 pt font. The interface is nice and their website makes them look professional but the reality is their program is awful.
The 16 on the PAT puts me in purgatory. I am not applying to dental school this year, but I might not be able to get in with a 16 on the PAT and if I do retake it my other scores might go down. It's not a pretty situation to be in and I don't want anyone else to be in the same place, so study hard!
Good Luck!
