My computer was recently retired to the care of my nieces, so it's time to step up to bat and replace it. The only problem is that, when it comes to making big purchases, I'm worthy of examination by gyn path.

Anyhoo, could somebody please just smack me upside the head and tell me to order the 15" Power Book that I've been drooling over for the last 4 months?

It is a sign from the gods that your computer has failed. Karma has decreed that you deserve the computer you want. You can justify the purchase by stating that 1. You are buying quality 2. You have wanted said powerbook for a while so it isn't a spontaneous puchase and 3. If you die tommorrow after being beaten by a jealous post call surgery intern, you will be happier knowing you bought the computer YOU wanted. Otherwise,you will settle for something you didn't want and everytime something goes wrong with the computer you will curse and say 'I should have bought the powerbook'

I just can't do it right now. I don't know about the rest of you poor sods, but between residency interviews, step 2 BS and moving to another state, my credit card has been hemorrhaging for some time. Perhaps it would be prudent to at least stop the bleeding before assaulting it with a four-figure purchase.

hey havarti, can't you do some no interest financing? it's not like you have to pony up all of the cash now. that's what i did for my new tv...i wasn't gonna spend $2500 all at once.

i think if you paid in installments while getting some positive cashflow from your residency, your ***** would hurt a lot less than it does now.

I remember this as I am about to go to a family picnic and will probably be asked to look at numerous skin lesions and hear all about their bowel problems.

(Un)fortunately I'm not the only medical type if the family, so my services as go-to boy for stupid health questions has been thin from the git go. Also, while my folks still have a roof over their heads, I'm still pretty horrified over what I've done to them over the past four years.

Maybe I'll start out slow, and just upgrade my TV.

Ya know, as I was typing my reply to Pingu, it occurred to me that my birthday isn't TOO far down the road. By that point I think I'll be justified in bending my parents over the proverbial sink and acquiring said powerbook. They won't drop the coin for the whole thing, but the bite will be lessened substantially.

If only they didn't have long-term care insurance! I would have way more leverage.

I'd like to apologize for openly displaying my psychotic shopping process, but I've come to a decision.

Andy and Pingu, I'm going to buy the 15" Power Book. Sorry Andy, try as I might, I just can't justify the 17" with super drive. It's awesome, but the only time I'll shell out $600 for two inches, well, I don't know, but there has to be some sort of porn-related joke to be made here.

The catch, is that I'm going to wait until I actually have my first paycheck in my hands. Call me paranoid, but I've been hosed by payroll departments before. At that point I will lay down the Visa Platinum. Afterwards I will wrap it in gauze, and probably burn it.

That reminds me, I was reading the book "Blink" recently, and within its pages Malcolm Gladwell makes mention of the studies that demonstrate how nicer seeming (for lack of a better phrase) doctors get sued way less, regardless of wrongdoing.

I thought back to all the hours of touchy feely training we got in med school. You know, everything that led up to the OSCE and Step 2 BS. It was such an awful waste of time. Or was it?

I've come to realize that the main problem with teaching people how to interview, ask open ended questions, place a hand on their shoulder and offer a kleenex when they cry, is that it's packaged all wrong. They're teaching useful skills, but in the wrong context. Nobody can be taught how to give a damn.

No, they should just call it what it really is: teaching us how to manipulate patients to avoid getting sued. Happy patients each day keep litigation at bay. If that was the stated goal, it would be a lot easier to see the benefit and enjoy the process.

I do wish humans were THAT open minded about everything.....I think we humans absolutely love those little mind games we are supposed to play as a part of being in a society.....

On a side note, is it just me or has the amount of traffic gone down wayyyyyyyy down on SDN Path? (Brigham is taking its toll on SDN Path!!!!!!!!).... 🙂

Yeah, the traffic has gone down but it's probably since we don't have many serious things to talk about at this point in time and the formerly voluminous number of stupid silly posts has been contained to their appropriate and easily ignorable (if desired) threads.

BTW, residency hasn't started yet. We don't have to start until after the holiday 🙂 It should be a fun stretch...it'll be long though since I go for almost 6 months I think without vacation.

I am thinking of putting up some cool cases, once I see them that is, like yaah has been doing intermittently...that will ensure that there is more pathology to be seen in the pathology forum.

Summers are slow, anyways. Maybe things will pick up when the new ERAS season gets closer.
