I'm smart 🙁 I get good grades..lol. But I can't read!!! I took the DAT and got an 18 in reading and of course brought down my AA (that and math..I can't count! jk).

Has anyone personally improved on the real thing from a lower reading to a higher one? I've done a lot of practice tests and I have tried a few strategies and I cannot find my niche. I find S&D difficult. I swear I need someone to sit down and take this thing in front of me so I can see what they are doing that I am not. I panic and think what am I going to do if I can't find this answer? Should I have read? Basically, I freak myself out.

Spend an afternoon in the library and watch people closely. Watch how people read and learn how to imitate them.

I assume you don't have any problem with RC and were born here? It's not that we can't read. We made it through university so we certainly can read. It's the timing. I think the test was done on purpose. For some people, they have a disadvantage in translating part of the sentence back to whatever language they normally think in since their childhood age. Some just panic under speed timing and lose their accuracy. Even though I grew up here since 6th grade, there is still some disadvantage when it comes to speed reading especially if you are bilingual. Like me, I naturally think half of the things I think or read in one language and the other half in English. I think many that have problem with RC are probably facing this same situation. If you don't know what I mean, imagine this was DAT was given in Russian or some language that you learned later in high school. Now try to take it match it to a native Russian. Your brain will have to re-translate back from Russian to English while the Russian just absorbing it straight in without re-reading his sentence.

This is my first language. I don't have a problem reading for school. I can't imagine what it must be like for someone with this as their second language. But people still do well and far better than my 18. Sometimes I feel like the information is from another planet when I use search and destroy. That's why I don't understand how people can use it. I am so intent on finding a word, that I cannot comprehend a thing that I read in between.

I don't have any problems reading and comprehending textbooks. But ever since I was very young, I have had a problem with being timed to complete comprehension questions. I can't get past the fact that I come to this portion without any prior knowledge that may help me on these questions. It's really bad though..I can't get past a 20 on practice tests and I just think I need to snap out of it!

Panic? S&D get me more nervous than usual. Me too, I need to watch someone who do well in RC and see what's the difference between me and them. Too bad we don't have any top RC scorer brave enough to film themselves on Youtube for it. heh

Watch how she doesn't dwell too long on any single page that she has difficulty comprehending. She also uses a backwards approach, reading from the back and towards the beginning. The end and the middle of every passage is where the majority of the information is condensed, and the beginning is usually just introductory fluff. You can learn from this video.

Hhahahah, nice vid!
Btw if SnD makes you nervous, maybe you should try another method?? Or maybe change how you're SnDing. Just because someone does something that works for them doesn't mean that it'll automatically work for you.

I don't since it does not result in better score. But it be nice to able to use it since it can help save extra minutes.
