I just went on FREIDA and did a search for psych residencies in NC, SC, and GA and only 9 programs came up:

Emory (Atlanta, GA)
Morehouse (Atlanta, GA)
MCG (Augusta, GA)
UNC (Chapel Hill, NC)
Duke (Durham, NC)
ECU (Greenville, NC)
Wake Forest (Winston-Salem, NC)
MUSC (Charleston, SC)
USC (Columbia, SC)

Can this be right? There is not a single community based hospital in these three states with a psych residency? I was hoping to score a "beach" residency and the only one actually on the water is MUSC and word is that it's pretty competitive.

Then I decided to check internal medicine in those same states and they have residencies in Wilmington, Savannah, and Charleston. 🙁

They don't even have a program in Jacksonville (there's an IM program though). It seems like there really aren't that many psych programs. 😕

Do USC, plenty of shyt around here to do, lots of rivers, hiking, etc.

Or MCG which is ipretty cool just more desolate.

I hate UNC, I'm not doing q3 call for ANYONE - and even though thye say q4, the intern told me the truth which is BS, no supervision, YUCK.

Go where its laid back and you TIME to go to the beach. If you interview here, make sure you send me your name so i can pik up a lunch with ya 😉

Thanks for the lunch invite. It will be about a year and a half from now so mark your calendar.

Could you explain what Q3 and Q4 mean exactly? Are there any other call schedules?

What do you think about MUSC?

Thanks.

Hi everyone.
I'm hoping to revive this thread because I'm from the south, currently living in the Southeast and am super interested in staying where it's WARM. Matching near home-sweet-home would also be nice (although anywhere that's warm is still in my mind for 2008).

I'd love more feedback about SE programs in this thread. Who thinks their program offers the best "balance" in it's education (learning vs scut, pathology exposure, psychodynamic & outpatient experience early, etc...oh and of course HUMANE call schedule). Who can moonlight and has the time to do so?

I'm currently looking at every program in SC, TN, NC, GA, FL, LA and (maybe)VA. Next would be the SW and southern Cali. All opinions welcome. If you know your institution has an away rotation that helps the applicant get the right exposure and you think your program is awesome PLEASE PM me and I will look into it, as I start applying for away rotations pretty soon.

Thanks tons and tons.

This website has some reviews of programs written by current residents (make sure you pay attention to the date the review was written because some of them are old). I know there have been other threads on this forum too where applicants have written about their impressions of programs after the interview.

SDN is also supposed to be adding a new feature where residents can post reviews of their programs, so be on the lookout for that too.

Several prior threads have recent reviews of programs in the southeast -- all you have to do is a search for specific program names.

FWIW, of the programs in the south that I interviewed at, I liked Duke. Their Program Director (Grace Thrall) is one of the top 2 in the country IMHO, and there is a lot of flexibility built into the program. See here and here for my review.

Cheers

Try Eastern Virginia Med school. Right near Va Beach and the NC border.
