I heard in Boston that The Current Chair at Pitt is the incoming chair at Spaulding.

I also heard that Dr. Burke, the current PD at Spaulding, is leaving to become chairman at Emory.

Not sure if those two events are related, but I thought it was interesting.

Yes, at the vendor fair, Spaulding had a little poster up with an announcement that Zafonte was the incoming chair of Rehab.

Never met him, but from the grapevine, heard he was a pretty good guy and an asset to Pitt.

I received a pamphlet from Spaulding recently confirming Dr. Zafonte's appointment.

Yes, but the real question, in my mind, is did Dr. Burke leave BECAUSE he didnt get the Chairman's position? Or had he already taken the Emory spot before Zafonte was named? or is the timing of this all just coincidental, and entirely unrelated?

I profess absolutely no inside information, but the timing is a bit too close for it to be a coincidence, IMHO

Cool for Emory to get Burke. nice guy, good lecturer.
Never worked with him, just heard him do a talk on DVT a few years ago. We chatted for an hour after the lecture. I like him. Emory will as well.

Both Dr. Zafonte and Dr. Burke have CVs worthy of department chairs. They are both excellent teachers and accomplished clinical investigators, and have administrative experience in academic settings that will prepare them for their new responsibilities.

There is little to be gained from speculating regarding whether their arrival/departure was coincidental. Mid-level attending physicians who are also accomplished academic clinical investigators are often presented with opportunities regarding whether or not to expand their skill sets into administrative/leadership roles as academic department chairs. Some of us still prefer "slaying the dragons" in the field, rather than fighting turf battles with other chairs. Yes, I suppose Dr. Burke could have stayed at Spaulding, where THREE renowned BI leaders (Zafonte, Glenn, Burke) would have been affiliated. On the other hand, I think it is more likely that he has been planning a transition to chair for some time.

In summary, I wish them both the greatest of success in their new endeavors.

where is the current Emory chair going?

Hmm.. howabout PD for Spaulding? Just kidding, but I am curious (mostly because I haven't heard this news yet) who they plan on appointing the next PD for Spaulding. I think there are plenty of possibilities from within their own faculty.

I interviewed there 2 years back and this was in my top 2 for the match. Regrettably I was not matched there, but let me tell you this. The curriculum as well as the facilities are top notch. You spend 2 months at MGH as a neuro resident. Spaulding is a great facility right on the water and they are in construction of their new facility just a block or 2 away. Only down side is the program is small, but it lives up to the name of Harvard. The faculty are from RIC, Kessler, UW, etc. The exposure is great and the residents seemed exceptionally happy at the interview. Regardless of who the PD is, this is a great program with an education worthy of the name Harvard.

I don't have much to add, just that Ross Zafonte is an exceptional leader. While there were certainly other great candidates theoretically up for the position, hiring Dr. Zafonte is certainly a very positive development for Harvard. If I were applying to residency, I would consider his hire a significant positive.

I spoke to several Spaulding residents while in Boston

1) Kevin O'Connor is the new PD

2) The concern raised by residents is that the number of electives may be significantly reduced with the new regime
