There's an intensivist at my hospital who routinely speaks on behalf of particular drug companies. He hosts 2-3 dinners a week, mostly within driving distance of the hospital, but about twice a month, the pharm companies will fly him to diff parts of the country.

Do such opportunities exist in the world of anesthesia?

Those opportunities exist in every specialty. While certain specialties are more prone to it (derm, cards and psych comes to mind) and some specialties are more restricted, such as path, it's very much possible for just about every specialty to do this.

There's been a few IV acetaminophen dinners with an anesthesiologist speaker lately. The remi rep brought lunch to our program a while ago. That might be an opportunity until the patent expires in a year or two.

I believe the Sugamma-train is coming to town this summer, so there's probably some speaking opportunity there.

I was asked to speak for precedex once, i did not think the payment made up for the time away from family. only an hour to speak but once you include travel time etc, it wasnt worth it for me.
