So what kind of doctors put most hours on regular basis after finishing their residencies and fellowships?

That's a no brainer. It's derm for sure.

yeah the most hours on the golf course/boutique

BTW...neurosurg is not a fellowship after general...it's a different specialty with its own match.

It all depends on how you tailor your practice.

However, for averages I'd guess:

Neuroslavery
Cards
Other surgical specialties
OB/GYN(night call - FUN)

i actually remember reading a study published by one of the major med associations (AMA?) before i started med school. it said cardiology on avg. had the most hours (~60-65 per week). this was back around 2000.

FYI Cardiac surgery is never called "cards". That's cardiology. Figure it's better to be corrected by someone here than for you to sound silly in front of your future peers. 😉

honestly, I'm very suprised IM is not getting anymore votes.

The residency isn't as high, but thats not the question being asked.

Seeing my father practice for the past 30 years, leads me to think that IM has some horrible hours assocaited with it.

He's on call at least 3/4 days a week (sometimes more if he's covering for someone else). And when he's on call, its a call every 30-45 mins.

He's out of the house at 6 am everday, back in around 8pm. But then he gets calls all throughout the night.

granted its one thing to be at a hospital for so long, its another to be hounded and get hardly any time to relax.

Granted some IM docs dont practice like that, but neither do all OB/GYNs either. Meet one who was very selective about delivering babies. did more GYN than OB work.

Well perhaps that poster means to say cardiology and not cardiac surgery. Surgeons don't have the monopoly on long hours.

I agree about the IM. I use to work 12 hour shifts at a local hosp. and those guys were there b4 me and they were still there when I left. Alot of times they would change clothes mid day. I saw one IM doc walking into the hosp. one day with 2 different shoes on. Luckily some body told him b4 he got to far into the hosp.

Yeah, I considered that but the context suggests that's what he meant. In any case that's a mistake I made. Not a big deal but it does sound dumb and newbielike. I'd rather have learned that from an anonymous internet poster than during a brief encounter with one of the nations top cardiac surgeons. 😉 Yes, (probably wrongly) he was much disgusted at being confused with a mere flea. 😀 ***disclaimer*** not my personal view.

Who knows, maybe he's pulling a 60hr week and has a second family on the other side of town. j/k BTW

Hint:The concept you are wondering about is called humor. 🙄

Saying Derm is humorous, putting it in the poll isn't all that funny.
