Is it very common for psychiatrists to choose a specialization in their residency training? I know that after you do a regular psychiatry residency, you can specialize in child/adolescent or adult and things like that by tacking on another 1 or 2 years of training, or you can apply to a triple-board program from the start.. But what if you know you like to work with certain topics? like sleep disorders, adhd, or eating disorders (for example)?
Do psychiatrists put in extra work to be able to focus on specific populations after or during residency?
Do you try to apply to a residency that shares a department with research that is related to who you want to work with, similar to how psychologists may choose schools that have research or mentors who do work in their specific area of interest?

If I wanted to work with PTSD people in a hospital setting, is taking my residency in a psychiatry dept that does PTSD research going to give me an edge? or is that just something MD-PhD's will benefit from?

Thanks in advance again.
