I know that there are many areas a physical therapist can specialize in but can you specialize in more areas than one like orthopedics, sports and neurology? Or do you just stick with one?

I plan on specializing in pediatrics and sports, so definitely possible but its a lot of work.

How do you specialize in PT? Do you just apply for jobs in a particular setting? There are no residencies so I don't know how to do this.

If you "specialize" in more than one area, are you really a "specialist?" I mean I guess I could see where sports medicine and orthopedics correlates, but others?

13panda, you beat me to the punch! There are residencies and fellowships. A residency would prepare you to take the ABPTS Specialist Certification. More info here: http://www.abpts.org/Certification/About/

From what I understand, fellowships can be done once you are already a certified specialist.

Thanks, guys. I think I should finish school first and then apply.
