There's a ton of other threads like this in the dental and pre-dental forums. Just scroll down and have a look. The short answer to your question is this: if you want to specialize (esp. in ortho or oral surgery) you have to work your butt off , no matter what school you go to. take care.

Delcious is correct. You'll have to work MUCH harder if you want to specialize than the rest of your classmates that have no such ambitions. Just look at the dental forum, you'll see people with 90+ board scores and class ranks 10+ who aren't matching to the specialties they want to.

It's hard work, and you might find out that it simply isn't worth it to you. But by all means, don't put aside your goals, just be realistic.

Some schools have lots of students who apply to specialties, while others seem to turn out mostly general dentists. It won't matter *much* where you go, and one might argue that in terms of class rank you would be better off attending a school that turns out mostly general dentists, in theory making it somewhat easier to gain a high class rank. This theory is riddled with holes, but it's fun to ponder.

  Yeah, look up past posts - saying that most people at columbia go to specialize is pretty incorrect.

That comment may be true for harvard though. But keep in mind, it isn't necessarily because they go to harvard that they get in. I mean, harvard is full of super-dorks who study like crazy to get good board scores. Class average for last years part I was like 96 or sumthin like that.

I think 30% of the class goes onto specialty programs. A whole bunch go on to do GPR or AEGD programs.

I'm thinking of changing my screen name to Dr.SuperDork. Does anybody have any comments? 😳

Exactly why I want to change my name!!!  I'm a guy; delicious does sound like a feminine name - I don't know why I didn't think that when I created it. At the time I asked myself: "what's a word that I really like saying" - and delicious was the first word that popped into my head.

Thank you Profchaos.

Well, it isn't written in stone anywhere that general dentists get poor grades. It's known that those wanting to specialize must get high grades to better their applications, but that doesn't mean that those doing general dentistry won't get high grades as well.
