Specializing after working as a GP

I know there are some threads on this topic but they are all quite outdated or medically related. I was hoping someone can provide some insight on applying for residencies (OMS) following a few years of work as a GP (~four years). Is this possible? Are these applicants at all disadvantaged? Would you still be able to use LORs from your time in dental school?
