Specialty competitiveness data

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for Sharing. I wonder if students from other Osteopathic schools could share similar information, in order for the rest of us to get a better perspective of the realities of matching as a DO.

That would imply our schools provide such a detailed and insightful breakdown for us.

How did they get the data for national USMLE s1 averages for 2019? They seem a little low all across the board. 234 for IR? 237 for derm?:eyebrow:

They used the 2018 data for national averages i believe, the sources are listed at the bottom. I think those numbers are osteopathic student averages for the specialty, which is a low n to sample from so may not be entirely useful

Our school won’t provide this type of info because it opens them up to legal repercussions. It’s too easy to figure out who matched where and who didn’t match at all with this kind of info.

Impressive stat breakdown for anesthesiology. I agree with their numbers/conclusions.
Looks like Anesthesiology is getting pretty competitive. Do you think this trend will continue with the upcoming match?

Except for one time period (not in this decade) the specialty has always been modestly competitive, with higher prestige attracting stronger applicants that may have otherwise applied to surgical fields.

I think it's a disservice to students to continually call entire specialties competitive (or not). It causes students to under and overestimate their chances, and it oversimplifies the interview and match process. Study hard and do what you like.

This is the most beautiful, student-success-centered sharing of data I have ever seen from a school. Thanks for posting. Data I never thought I would see from any school.

Honestly our academic/school advising department (and their website) is one of my favorites at my school. There's tons of other resources they post publicly on their website.

For any students out there with lack of proper advising at their schools I highly recommend giving the website a look through. MSUCOM Office of Academic and Career Guidance - College of Osteopathic Medicine - Michigan State University

Lol, that would mean they would have to actually put together something useful. How about some mandated 3rd party 'match advice' from a former MEd who used to work undergrad admissions instead? It will only add $250 to your tuition and it will help out a former employee a lot! Didn't you get into medicine to help people?
