I had accidentally received a WU in a class when I only attended the first two weeks. The professor knows about this and understands the situation considering I received an A on her first two quizzes.

This quarter I received an A in the same class with another professor. So now I have a WU and an A on my transcript which looks like I repeated the class unfortunately.

My question is, would it be better to have the first professor switch my WU to an F instead so that the A can count as a grade replacement? Or would it be better to leave the WU as is.

I emailed AACOM and they said a WU would not be replaceable as it was not an actual score.

This leads me to wonder about the human element of this entire concept of grade replacement. Does the F look better or does the WU look better?

On one side of the coin, I am grateful for the higher GPA that grade replacement can give, but on the other side, I wonder how admissions feel when they see courses repeated for a better grade.

The two thought processes I imagine are:

This student showed initiative and did well.

or

Of course they would do better the second time around, they saw this material twice. They shouldn't be rewarded when others did well the first time around.

Furthermore, as a reader, when I see the phrase "accidentally received a WU" I would probably smirk at such a comment.

To elaborate, when I tried to drop the class electronically, I thought it dropped successfully and that was the end of it. Unfortunately that was not the case and I went the entire quarter technically still in the class.

The professor did not suggest "erasing" the score completely. I don't think that is even possible. But perhaps I can bargain to get an F (bizarro world logic over here).

I'm pretty sure the WU looks better than an F in terms of applying. Is it a prerequisite class? If so, then yes, probably taking the F to retake may be a after move. If it's just a random elective then def take the WU and be on your way.

Thank you for the reply, I appreciate it

It was an upper division microbiology class, so not necessarily a prerequisite but still an important class.

I think the debate I'm having is what a WU versus an F means to admissions. WU is an unofficial withdrawal that counts as an F for GPA purposes. An F is an F.

One choice boosts the GPA but looks like I took the class and failed at it. The other way gives clues that I was not present in the class, but causes my GPA to suffer.
