Third and final speech of the semester and I'm nervous. It's about ingredients found in consumer products being linked to illness. I have no techniques for calming myself. Breathing exercises are hard cause I find myself way too worried about my breathing. Picturing everyone naked also makes me nervous because I think there's a thinking cloud over my head and everyone can see it. I'm prepared and I'm still nervous. Really don't want to use caffeine to give me a boost cause I feel like I'm doing drugs when I drink coffee. I'm serious, I need advice.

Yeah uh a stimulant (caffeine) would do the opposite of calming you down.

How did you get through the first 2 speeches?

This forum is not for medical advice, I realize you have a deadline but I think you would benefit from talking to someone about your fear of public speaking. A therapist will be able to help you with techniques to calm yourself. I'm sure your school provides some confidential counseling.

I honestly do not know, but today I just walked out of class and the professor asked where are you going and I just said "I gotta go" and then I went home and cried.

When I have to speak in public (especially to students and young people) it helps me to remind myself that most of the people in the audience are not really listening and probably thinking about their own presentations or what they are going to do that night haha

When you find yourself momentarily not knowing what to say, just pause, (try to put a thoughtful - not panicked -expression on your face) then resume with what you wanted to say using a very short sentence. Even if you can't find the exact right words -- (searching for the right word is a good reason to pause.) Then pause again. Repeat the very short sentence. (Makes it sound really important.) Then resume. Watch the really good public speakers, and they're not afraid of short silences. No fillers --

1. Stop preparing for it 24 hours before - you'll start overthinking things.
2. Don't think about it for the next 24 hours
3. Right before you give your speech, write down 4 bullet points about what your main ideas in your speech are.
4. Wing it.

Trust me. It will sound a lot more natural and confident this way*

*Or at least this works for me

Do you have any friends in the class? If so, look directly at them and talk to them. You can talk to your friends, can't you????

yes do this! it will make you feel a lot more comfortable.

also I don't recommend winging it if you're this nervous, just keep practicing

Please talk to a professional. It's normal to be a bit nervous speaking in front of people, but if it is as debilitating as it seems to be for you, you need more help than just some calming techniques.
