i am pretty bad at spelling and its making me nervous that during the 15min essays i will have to spell something uncommon 🙂

Yes, some of the schools (Arizona in particular) will grade your spelling on the hand-written responses. One thing that you can try is to stick to vocabulary words that you know and are comfortable scribbling down in a timed essay. If there are some words that continually give you a hard time then another approach would be to write them down and memorize them (I have found that by doing this patterns of consonants and vowels will often emerge which will make the spelling that much easier).

if they grade spelling then a lot of people on one of my interviews are screwed... i will not give away our essay topic but it had to do with mannequins... i know for sure i saw it spelled at least 3 different ways just on happening to glance at other's papers while handing them in. i think the whole essay was a cover to see how many people knew how to spell 'mannequin'. 😀
