When looking at a molecule to determine how a signal will look (doublet,triplet,etc) do you only look at hydrogens from adjacent carbons?This is what i always thought, you look atom over in either direction and count the number of protons bonded to those atoms.
Somewhere else I read that you look 3 bonds away. From the way I'm counting, it's one bond away to get from the carbon of interest to the adjacent carbon, then one more bond to go from adjacent carbon to its proton. 3 bonds to me means that you could look up to 2 atom positions away. I've never seen that before, though. I just wanted ot get some clarification
